Top 5 Viva Era Songs

Half of the fun of loving this band of ours as much as we do is being able to discuss thier past work while waiting for whatever it is that the future will bring. With the tour now over and a new web site up and running (or at least in the making) the Viva era comes to a close. Now that is has had the time to sink in we can look back on the past 15 months with some well informed opinions. My question for all of you is as follows:

In your opinion what are the 5 best songs of the Viva la Vida era?

mine-

05. Lovers in Japan

04. Glass of Water

03. Viva la Vida

02. Violet Hill

01. Strawberry Swing

I take a great amount of joy in being able to be a fan of a band that can be spoken of in "eras" - to me that just shows how much the band is always growing and changing. You can hear it in each of the four albums and it will be beyond exciting to see where they go next.

1. Lovers in Japan

This song captures the spirit of the era perfectly. Energetic, a bit different, and theatrical. The butterflies helped solidify this epic, of course, but it holds its own as a recording as something you can listen to repeatedly. I've had a lot of "1st place" songs over the course of the era, but Lovers emerges victorious as the era closes.

2. Strawberry Swing

This song was a huge grower for me, but I'm in love with it now. It's a dreamy song that simultaneously recalls simpler days while adding some fresh new tones. If you're looking for less mainstream material from the era, it doesn't get better than Strawberry.

3. Life in Technicolor I + II

I feel these two need to be mentioned together. I disagree with the people who say that LITii should have been Viva's opener in the first place, as I think in order to fully appreciate LITii, you need to appreciate how amazing the instrumental version is. After that, the lyrics are merely the icing on the sake.

4. Viva la Vida

When you take away all the mainstream appeal and plagiarism allegations and whatnot, this really is a beautiful song. It's an uplifting and harmonious anthem that draws from every theme of the era, from revolutions to paintings to death. When this song plays, you know you want to sing along every time.

5. Glass of Water

This barely edged out Violet Hill in the end. It could have been a single, but you know what? I'm perfectly happy with having an upbeat song that's more obscure. I really do love the instruments in this song, with a real bang of a chorus and finale. Rainy Day and Prospekt's March may have been robbed of the live treatment, but I'm glad Glass of Water wasn't.

I strongly agree with your reasons. Great list!

But I can't really pick 5 songs! They are all amazing in thier own way.

I agree with your comment about bands having eras. It shows an evolution in music and experimentation, hallmarks of being great, innovative artists. I'm proud CP can be classified so. I love the Viva era, I guess, in a superficial way. I like Music from the AROBTTH days and X&Y. As for Viva, The music is not my favorite, but it is the most powerful. The Viva days are CP's glory days, so to speak. It was their most successful time and I wish nothing but success on this band, so I'm happy. Theres something about viva that makes people excited, come together, and be in awe of this band's talents.PLUS THE VISUALS OF VIVA(French Rev theme, music vids, and art in general)WERE STUNNING.

But I digress....

1. Life in Technicolor ii

2. Violet Hill

3. Death and All His Friends

4. Strawberry Swing

5. of course, Viva La Vida
