Parents could be banned from parking outside schools in a bid to combat childhood obesity.

Health chiefs in Greater Manchester want to introduce residents-only parking around schools to encourage more children to walk or cycle in.

The recommendations from Greater Manchester Health Commission (GMHC) come as childhood obesity figures reveal on average almost 10 per cent of four and five-year-olds and more than 18 per cent of 10 and 11-year-olds in Greater Manchester are obese.

Manchester has the region's highest obesity rate, with almost a quarter of 10 and 11-year-olds dangerously overweight, according to the Government's child measurement programme.

Forecasts predict that more than 1.7million men and women in Greater Manchester will be overweight by 2020.

GMHC's report also recommends more 20mph zones in residential side streets to create more spaces to allow safe outdoor play.

Director of the Greater Manchester Public Health Network, Will Blandamer, said: 'The basic idea is to try and make walking and cycling and active travel as easy as possible and particularly to promote it among children.

'Twenty mile-per-hour zones have had success elsewhere and now we are asking what else can we do to make areas around schools as safe and pleasant for children as possible?

'Walking buses are already in use at a lot of schools but it's about exploring as many opportunities as possible because we cannot continue to have obesity figures at the levels they are.'

A panel at Central Manchester University Hospitals health trust last month highlighted the following statistics:

  • 28 per cent of children in England are obese
  • 97 per cent of obese children have parents who are overweight
  • Eight out of nine parents with overweight children do not recognise their child is obese

The GMHC has worked extensively on ideas to improve life expectancy and tackle obesity.

Earlier this year it rolled out 'healthier' salt shakers, with fewer holes, to 900 fish and chip shops in the region.

Health chiefs calculated that if the new shakers - with five holes instead of the average 18 - were introduced in 1,000 chippies, it would reduce salt consumption by 28 tonnes per year.

The commission is also working on a new healthy catering checklist for takeaways.

Now the report on the parking ban has been sent to the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities, the GMHC will lobby councils to introduce the measures.

Yeah, they changed the parking rules round our school recently and all the parents got letters saying they could get fined for continuing to park there - hasn't made the slightest difference

18% are obese? Fuck, it's not even that bad here.

What if they live far away from school and need a ride?

Aha! The chillrunz are now more easy to catch! PEDOBEAR APPROVES

The solution:

Cheaper vegetables/fruits, more expensive meats, and everybody has to pay for their own health care.

Oh and we could program everyone to find fatties less attractive than their fit counterparts. What's that? God already designed us that way?

What's with this obesity problem? We used to run around till past dark, playing games and riding bicycles like wild animals when we were kids! Exercise should be FUN - then it's a natural. But yes, fat parents often had fat kids, that's true.. It's patterning, but they can choose to change that methinks.. I've got it! :idea2::bulb2: Offer them the option of using pedal cars to get to school, if they want to park close to the buildings! :laugh3: Heck, I'd go for it!

Why more expensive meats? How about more expensive junk foods and fast foods?

I fucking love meat, it's not bad if cooked properly.

Maybe it would if they actually started dishing out the fines!;)

Did they really need to take a picture of her ass? >_<

Yes, it's the daily mail :P

Chances are they will employ a private parking company which will dish out unenforceable invoices

They force them to walk to school and then they sit down for several hours and do work.

Educating people better on nutrition and a balanced diet might be more effective, who cares if parents drive their children to school honestly what a moronic plan.

my parents always dropped me to the school gates,

i don't see me suffering from any sort of obesity.

though my first thought was "Run fattie run"

I couldn't agree with you more!

They're doing the same thing in our school districts, but get this...

just this spring they're planning to fire more than half of the cross walkers-What we call the people in my town who direct the children safely across the streets.I know it sounds like a type of drag queen-So now they have children crossing the streets with more of a risk of being killed by traffic than dying from being overweight!

At my old school all we ever seemed to do was sport and lunch.

So that's a balance, I guess... But, then again, they never taught us anything edumacational.

Did they really need to take a picture of her ass? >_<

I think they were trying to emphasize what they thought of the supposed state of British children.

"FAT ASS."

When I say "more expensive meat" I'm pointing out that meat is subsidized by most governments. If you take away the free farmer cash, the cost of unhealthy foods increases, and the cost of healthy food decreases.

So for instance, fruits and vegetables are expensive because our government makes it illegal to hire certain people (undocumented workers) who would work in the fields very cheaply. Instead farmers are forced to hire workers who get an artificially-high wage, and this forces the price of the food up.

In America corn syrup is cheaper than sugar. There are tons of examples of how government interference causes our diet to be skewed toward unhealthy food.
