[2016-02-07] Coldplay headlining Super Bowl 2016 - Confirmed

Recommended Posts

At lunchtime I got in a conversation with a collegue (which I don't see that much) and we were talking about a single release of a Belgian band.

At some point in the conversation I was mentioning Coldplay and she got really excited and told me that she had been watching the SB50 Halftime show. And that she really liked the Coldplay part, which was too short to her opinion, and she'd rather not have Beyoncé and Bruno Mars playing.

I was like "Oh, you are my friend from now on". :)

There probably are a lot of people who really liked the show, but somehow the negative ones are speaking louder than the possitive ones.

Beyonce and Bruno Mars ruined it. It was Coldplays Superbowl halftime show and they were pushed out by Bey and Bruno.

Here are the video statistics of Viva la Vida from YouTube. There are more daily views then it was back in 2008. Super Bowl happened I think...

Can anyone explain what happened to the video during the second half of 2010? Did it get taken down or something?

So I wrote about my experience in participating as one of the fans in the halftime show, I wanted to share it with you guys and also wrote it for myself to remember everything. So it is VERY long sorry, but if you're interested read on... lol

I entered a volunteering position to be a fan at the halftime show. We needed 10 people who could attend the rehearsals and be able to RUN we also had to sign a legal agreement to keep everything a secret. I was able to find the 10 people including my friend Lauren who I met here on the forums. It was incredibly exciting to see all those BTS Pepsi videos because I didn't know what we would be doing!

First rehearsal

we found what exactly we were doing, which was basically attend a free concert! :D So they began with playing Coldplay music to "see who knew the words" and it felt like an audition so we jumped for our lives! It got intense trying to jump, dance, AND sing the words. I wanted to show how excited I was but my lungs were on fire haha, I was so out of shape. (Super impressed with how Chris can do what he does) Unfortunately I had some idiots in my group who didn't do anything to show excitement. Other teams got chosen for the front sections of the stage. They were all high school students so they had plenty of energy, I can understand why they chose them haha. But all was not lost because my group still managed to get an okay spot even though it was in one of the back quadrants, we were in the front of that area. It was super fun because it's a coldplayer's dream, just sing and dance to Coldplay music for hours, lol. That's what we did. They told us the setlist except for Beyonce and Bruno's part. And we practiced all the songs, and the clapping, and the thing where Chris wanted us to get low during AOAL, and also the hearts at the end of Up & Up. Oh and we had to make sure we knew the chorus so we could sing along of course. So after all that we were put into the quadrant group teams. Mine was named Team Charlie. Then they sectioned us further into "pods" I was in pod "F". This was so we could practice running together as a group. They told us some celebrities might be among us like maybe Chris or a conductor, initially they also had planned for the violin kids to be hidden among us. So it was all super fun and exciting that first day, my body HURT all over the next day because of how hard I tried to impress the choreographers. It was very tiring and they only gave us a snack and water lol. I didn't mind, it was all for Coldplay of course!

Second Rehearsal

This was a dress rehearsal. Before we had met a different location but for the dress rehearsal we met at the Stadium. We checked in, went through security check, where they guided us only to where we could go to. They had escort us to restrooms so we couldn't leave the designated area. No phones allowed of course. We sat in the stands waiting for instructions. The dress rehearsal included everyone in the halftime show. The flowers, the pepsi logo kids, the YOLA kids, and Coldplay, Beyonce, and Bruno. They called the first team called "Alpha" the VERY VERY lucky group that got to run with Chris! UGH was so jealous!! We waited a LONG time watching the 500 volunteers who set up the stage to set it all up. They had to do it in 6 minutes for the show but they took hours that day lol. The first Coldplay band member I saw was Will! He walked out by himself with a few other non-band members including R42! My sister had spotted R42 first but then I noticed Will was there! So I waved, and I seemed to be the only who noticed him and waved back! :D and gave us a thumbs up for being excited. He seemed like he was just taking a look at the stadium and left back.

We waited a lot more, and spotted Bruno and Beyonce, others were more excited about that. We slowly started to be told to move down from the seating area to the field which was covered up to prevent damage to the field. We stood in our assigned quadrants and waited for the first run through. While we stood there, Will was the only band member I could see from my point of view. We were soooo close to him and waved at him and he smiled and waved back at me. It was so crazy to know that he could see me and was acknowledging I was there! lol. I couldn't stop staring because it didn't seem real! We saw Beyonce practice her piece, and Bruno as well. The entire area was protected by helicopters and a lot of security, no one was allowed to record anything.

So first run through, we saw how Team Alpha was told to run and stay in place no matter how excited they were to be so close to Chris! They had to freak out on the inside lol. We saw how Chris started with Yellow and proceeded with the rest of the show but it was not a smooth run through. The first was just to get a feel of what the transitions of the songs was like. So we didn't do too much of the singing and jumping just yet. Occasionally we would sing along when Chris stopped singing while he figured out some things. At one point Will smiled at us because we finished singing Chris' part on Paradise :) Then Chris talked to us and said how we were an important part of the show because we were the "engine room" it's how they would get their energy. So he said we were in this together like a family and that we could just go for it and sing along during practice. He also walked to the back part where I stood, and it was sooo exciting!! He told us he would come over during Paradise and sing the "ooohhohoh" part haha he was so cute, he said "well, you guys will get it" lol He walked over to talk to Will and that's when one of my teammates yelled at him and said "Hey Chris!!" and he turned around! She then said "This is Ana and she is your biggest fan!" So Chris looked directly at me and said "Hi Ana" and all I could do was stand there like an idiot and smile and wave! :( I wish I would have said something but I just froze! So basically we had them all to ourselves having them go through the show a few times. Beyonce practiced her part without sound during our rehearsal and we saw her different costume choices. Oh and we also saw Phil there :)

We practiced running out of the field all the way to the outside of the stadium. On our way out to the tunnel exits Chris was walking among us so I was trying to catch up to him, when I got close enough I saw that a little girl was with him now. We got so close but suddenly we were asked to stop where we were going and wait on the edge of the field. Turns out the little girl was Blue Ivy LOL. After we practiced the exit to the outside of the stadium and did one final run through as if it were the real thing. We practiced the run from the tunnels to the stage. And sang along to the performance. They even did the fireworks too. Then we ran outside again and they told us to keep running and that we were done for the night. We began at 2:00pm and ended at 7:00pm. They gave us a lunch as we walked outside, we were starving from only having a small snack at the beginning. Super TIRED again! Another incredible day of just being with Coldplay!! I will never forget how I felt to have the boys so close!

Finally on Game Day!!!

We met up at 12:00pm at an offsite location. We got lunch, checked in, got our bracelet that showed we were part of the halftime cast and were led into an area with a screen where we waited to get loaded into buses. We were told about really going for it, and giving the energy to the artists, and they told us what Chris had said about us being important to the show. We loaded by groups and the buses were escorted by police. So police stopped traffic everywhere we passed so the buses would not be late to the stadium. That was super cool to feel so important haha. We arrived at the stadium and we had to jog to the security check point, that alone was tiring. We lined up outside and were given those Love buttons Chris hands out! <3 We waited a LONG time and we all had to use the restroom but they wouldn't let us because it was getting close to the show. It was so nerve wrecking to wait!!! We finally were led inside and waited the last few minutes for halftime. That was EVEN more nerve wrecking! We walked toward the opening of the tunnels and we got the first glimpse of the immensity of the stadium! It was so overwhelming and exhilarating to see and hear it all. I remember seeing the crowd colorful but I couldn't understand why it seemed so colorful. At this point we were waiting for the field crew volunteers to set up the stage in the 6 minutes allowed. Then we were asked to move to the left because Bruno and his crew were going to exit out. Bruno walked literally right next to me and his guards pushed me to move out of the way. The lady in front of me got distracted by Bruno so when everyone began running I had to push her and yell RUN!! She finally snapped back into focus haha and we SPRINTED!! I didn't look anywhere, everything was a blur of color! I remember jumping over cables, running past cable men and feeling my leg muscled HURT I seriously thought I ripped something. We had a brief moment to catch our breath (like 3 seconds) then Chris started with Yellow and the whole show began! My mouth was so dry I could hardly sing along, and I was so tired. And this time the crowd in my area was much crazier than at practice so they were pushing people towards the front. Beyonce was right up in front of me and after her first performance piece walked right in front of me, like literally I was in her personal space lol. but her body guard was protecting her of course and led to her to hide behind Will's drum set. The rest of the show continued and we just enjoyed singing and dancing and ended with making a heart shape with our hands. I'm explaining all the things that happened but I can't explain the EMOTIONS I felt!! it was so INCREDIBLE!! After the show ended we RAN again to get out of there as fast as we could. There was a lot of crowding and field people yelling for us to keep running! We were all still filled with adrenaline and we got high fives from some crew people saying good job. And immediately after exiting we walked all the way back to the buses.

Back at the offsite location, I could NOT walk!! I feared I REALLY had ripped a muscle. They had hot pizza ready for us and lots of water, and they had the rest of the game playing. They told us we would watch he halftime show after it ended to see how we did. They also gave us a hat that said Super Bowl 50 Pepsi halftime show as a gift. My group left home as soon as we got our hats to avoid traffic. I got home and could not believe what had just happened!! I finally saw the halftime show on my phone and thought it was so beautiful I had not seen how everything looked! all I had seen before was the stage because we were so focused on being excited during the show. I did see the stadium become way more colorful but I didn't know it said "Believe in Love" until I watched it all.

I loved how it all came together for Coldplay's vision! I thought it was all so BEAUTIFUL. My only critique would be to have more Coldplay. If they had done Hymn For The Weekend I think the show would have felt more balanced towards Coldplay being the headliner. I LOVED every minute of it and wish I could do EVERYTHING all over again!! I keep explaining this experience as an Adventure Of A Lifetime! I'm so grateful for everything and I just love the boys even MORE now that this happened because they truly care about the fans and how we experience their music. They made us feel important to the show :) BTW it feels good and weird to say all of this because we were always told we couldn't say a single thing about it! I still get the feeling I would get in trouble lol but they can't kick me out of the show anymore! :P Now when I hear Adventure Of A Lifetime I get taken back to that day <3

That's awesome! Thanks for sharing it with us!

I didn't know that the audience had to rehearse that much :surprised:

I've watched it a couple times and have grown to like it a bit more. At first I wasn't too happy with it the overall performance. I was excited and nervous that Coldplay was performing though. I even had butterflies right before the show started. Ive seen them 8 times live and know what a great live band they are, so for them to finally get the chance to display this on such a grand stage I thought was well deserving.

I personally think that they got picked for the wrong Super Bowl. I do think they put on a good show though. It's just that going into it Im sure they knew that since it was the 50th, that they were going to have to do some things that would appease the NFL, like doing a little montage of past performances and share the stage with Beyonce and Bruno. I also think it shows how unselfish Coldplay are, that even though they are the headliners, they were willing to share THEIR moment with those artist and pay tribute to performances from the past.

If it were a different Super Bowl, I would have liked the performance to be at night for one, use the xylobands, and have them play 3 full songs. Coldplay's medley felt too rushed and I felt didn't transition too well. If you really didn't know the songs, you almost had to ask yourself, what song are they playing? They were just too short and I've never liked medleys anyways. I would have liked to at least see ASFOS played in place of Paradise.

I thought Bruno and Beyonce were good too. But I think we all knew they were going to overshadow Coldplay or people were going to talk about them more than Coldplay. I read a comment earlier about how their outfits didn't fit. I agree to a point. And I'm not being superficial or anything but I think that the color palette and the theme or it all, with them wearing their black outfits, it just didn't fit the color palette and almost felt like they were doing their own thing. I thought they were suppose to be telling a story, but it felt like Bruno and Beyonce were trying to tell their own.

I did like the Clocks/Fix You/Up&Up mash up though. It was a really great message and finale. Could have done without the montage but it was going to happen. I felt a sense of satisfaction that these artist were singing lyrics to a Up&Up, a song that Chris wrote.

And Beyonce is kind of getting on my nerves a little bit. How do you promote your new world tour right after when you aren't even the headliner? It should have been a Coldplay commercial if anything, but then again they boys aren't like that. She also releases her new single a couple days before and then performs it and knows that people are going to go crazy about her afterwards. I just think she just comes off as being selfish about the whole thing. And then with the story in the RS article about her rejecting one of Chris songs, saying its awful! Get outta here! What nerve!

But I do think Coldplay will still benefit from the sales and number from playing the Super Bowl. I do think from a promotional stand point why wouldn't you release a new single a month before and AHFOD right before the Super Bowl and announce the world tour after? I think that would have been the logical thing to do, that is of course they were really worried about numbers and getting to number 1. But maybe they aren't.

Overall after a couple more watches of the show, I do think it was a solid show. And I am very proud of Coldplay. Ive been with them since the very beginning and to see them get where they are now, makes me immensely happy because I know they are happy. And no matter what anyone says about them(which I dont care) I will always voice my appreciation for Coldplay! Cant wait to see them live when they come back to Levi Stadium!

It was really important for our safety and others to know where to go and how run onto and off the field. I didn't notice just how many people were on the field, but now it makes perfect sense, after seeing the videos, to have everyone organized to get on the field smoothly and on time! It was thousands of people on the field :o

That's such an awesome experience you had! I can't believe I got to be there working on other things but got to watch the rehearsal 3 times! But you, you got to be IN IT! Uber jealous but that's so awesome and I'm really happy for you! I kept waiting in the tunnels for at the points the band was supposed to go by, but I kept missing them or had to actually do my job. Lol But what a memorable experience!

I think my favorite part of watching you all was when you all scattered and sprinted off the field! Was like all of a sudden you were all gone!

I was doing computer support work for one of the other companies involved. I routinely make trips down to that stadium. Nothing related to the Halftime show unfortunately. And that bracelet is so cool! I heard they were giving out the pins to everyone that came in and was a little ticked they didn't give some to the employees as well. So now I have to go find one online. haha

Oh I see! It's so great to know there were more coldplaying members out there that day! :D There was a guy in my group who had a cool shirt from one of the Ghost Stories shows. I didn't say hi to him though. So guess you will go back on Sep. 3 when Coldplay comes back :D They had a few extras when they handed them out to us and some employees were grabbing them and passing a few among each other

I thought about posting and seeing if anyone else was around because other than working I had literally nothing to do this trip. But alas. And yes! I'm trying to work it out! Especially since I doubt they will come to my stadium. The problem is just coming up with excuses to stay somewhere where I can watch the show and dance around without having to actually work .... so if you have any ideas. haha

Ana, thank you so much for sharing your experience with us! It means the world to be able to picture what you did and felt being a part of such an incredible show! You describe it so clearly that I felt I was there. I wonder if you could sell an article to a magazine, like Reader's Digest, based on your post? It was that good, and I'm sure even non-Coldplayers would be interested in what this was like for you!

Wow! thank you so much! It makes me so happy that you liked reading what I wrote and that I could share the experience with the Coldplaying community! I definitely had you all in my mind during this entire experience because I knew this would be something everyone here would have loved to do! I'm also really flattered that you said it was good enough to sell to a magazine! haha but not sure if that is something possible. Also, I think I mentioned about some teammates that I didn't quite like and that would affect a few close relationships I have lol. Still, I am just happy that I could share it all and would have loved to tell the band how much the experience meant to fans :)

Can anyone explain what happened to the video during the second half of 2010? Did it get taken down or something?

If I had to take an educated guess it would be something to do with introducing ColdplayVEVO and shifting all the stuff from EMI's channel over to there. Don't have anything to back it up though

Here's What the 2016 Super Bowl Halftime Show Sales Spike Looks Like

2/17/2016 by Joe Lynch

Generally speaking, if you perform a concert for the largest TV audience of the entire year, you're going to see an increase in album sales. So after Super Bowl 50 -- which attracted 111.9 million viewers on Sunday, Feb. 7 -- halftime performers Coldplay,Beyonce and Bruno Mars were bound to see some serious sales gains.

Bruno Mars -- who performed the No. 1 smash "Uptown Funk!" with Mark Ronson and had a dance-off with Beyonce that set Twitter aflame -- saw the biggest sales percentage increase. In the week prior to the Super Bowl (sales period ending Feb. 4, 2016), his two-album catalog moved a combined total of approximately 2,000 copies. That combined total spiked to 10,000 copies for the week of the Super Bowl (period ending Feb. 11). With a 400 percent sales increase, there is the most new life on Mars' catalog after Super Bowl 50.

Super Bowl Halftime Show Album Sales Boost From 2010-2014

While Mars saw the largest percentage increase, Coldplay enjoyed the biggest numerical gain from the Super Bowl. Leading up to the Super Bowl, the U.K. pop-rock act moved a combined total of 20,000 copies of their seven studio albums in the U.S. For the week of the Super Bowl, Coldplay's seven studio albums (lead by their latest, A Head Full of Dreams) sold a combined total of 93,000 copies. That's a 365 percent sales increase for Chris Martin and company (additionally, Super Bowl 50 pushed their seventh album to No. 1 in the U.K. for the first time).

As for Beyonce, the Queen -- who stole the Super Bowl halftime show according to numerous critics and online memes -- actually experienced the lowest album sales increase. She saw her five-album solo catalog increase sales to the tune of 44.4 percent, moving 9,000 for the week ending Feb. 4 and 13,000 for the week ending Feb. 11.

Katy Perry & Missy Elliott's Super Bowl Sales Boost

It should be noted, of course, that many viewers revved up by Beyonce's Super Bowl performance might've turned their attention to her new single, "Formation" -- which was available as a free download on Super Bowl weekend -- instead of buying her previous albums. Unlike Bey, Mars and Coldplay weren't offering a brand new single for free that weekend, which might partially explain why they enjoyed a bigger boost in album sales.

Check out the sales increases in the graphic below.

a wonderful letter to the editor by a volunteer!

My second observation is that there's quite a bit of post-halftime show chatter and various write-ups about how Bruno stole the show or Beyoncé stole the show, or how both did and that they were the real stars at halftime. I can't argue that they were totally fabulous, but I'll have to disagree that they "stole the show" and I want the world, or at least my little corner of it, to know why.

When we arrived at our second rehearsal on the Thursday before the game, Chris Martin of Coldplay was down on the field working with multiple leaders and coordinators of the show. He was running all over the place from stage to field to tech people with an intense look of focus as they cemented all the details of who was going to be where and how it was all going to come together. We ran the show three times that night, and after one of the run-throughs, he intentionally took the time to quiet the mass of chaos going on and thank us for being there. He called us the "engine" and the "energy" of the show, told us we were important and spoke to us with kindness and respect. He then went on to pour himself into multiple songs with full energy. His musicianship was also impressively displayed by the collaboration between him and Gustav Dudamel, who conducted the youth orchestra. Then he moved out of the way to allow the other artists to do their thing and shine.

And shine they did. The halftime show is known for sparkle and brilliance, and man they brought it, for sure. We were all admittedly star-struck when they suddenly appeared before us at rehearsal. Bruno hadn't been confirmed yet, so it was pretty thrilling when he popped up. Beyoncé appeared in front of blinding lights and kept an air of mystery as she and her girls danced in sync before our eyes to a song we couldn't hear. We assumed it was because the song was a new release and couldn't yet be revealed. Then they all came together on the stage, and it was big and exciting and only feet or even inches away from us. All that sparkling gold and black. Crazy. And then, Bruno and Beyoncé disappeared and we were left with this floaty feeling of having just been face to face with some outrageous fame.

But even though those two undoubtedly upped the star power, it was still Chris who really impressed me. Even on game day, he was right there with us at the end of the tunnel, and he looked as giddy as we were to run out there.

Let me be very clear that I have nothing bad at all to say about Bruno or Beyoncé. They weren't rude or unkind in any way. They were awesome. They, too, poured countless hours into their performances and smiled at us and I had a ball singing along with them!

I'm just saying that in Chris Martin I saw a gifted, fun musician shine even brighter because of his humility and kindness. That is louder and cooler and sexier than any flashy sequins in my book.

I enjoyed Coldplay music before this experience. Then, I got to know it better this week as I practiced singing along with their songs during my commute. Now, I consider myself a fan. Because in my opinion, humility and kindness equals rock star, and even the biggest names can't steal that away.
