I think all Coldplay means is that they are sick of trying to write rock music, It just has become boring for them so they want to explore other genres you know? There is nothing wrong with that. I mean imagine being Coldplay and effectively writing 100's of rock songs for ten years of your career. Eventually you have to say: okay lets try disco, hip hop, straight pop! Why not?

So for us fans, we are disappointing because we technically only got 5 era's of different styles of rock and now 2 era's of pop/experimenting. But for Coldplay those 5 era's were filled with thousands of hours of working on rock songs...that has to get dull. Now in my personal taste, I don't think they have done a masterpiece job on these last two albums, and that is largely because they are accepting pop production and more reserved song writing. But I admire them just accepting that your sound has to change.

Chris, and coldplay members, how do you think Rock is dead, did you listen Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, alabama shakes?

Stop speaking shit.

He never said Rock is dead. They just mean that it is a genre that is pretty saturated. Which is totally true...there have been a hundred different genres stemming from rock since the 1950's. Rock will always be alive and well, but whether or not that rock is interesting anymore to Coldplay is another issue entirely.

But yeah, of course we have loads of great rock acts nowadays.

I really want them to do Jonny's Jazz record now...

I dont like this... Like at all. We've still got some modern rock bands rocking it out on the top charts. Like Bastille (with a new album coming out next year), Imagine Dragons, And Onerepublic (Who are already on their way to releasing their LP4). If Rock music has nowhere to go, then how did the aforementioned bands' songs become hits?

Those bands are hardly rock. Much more like your average 2010s "alternative" band.

This sentences say it all. They're done

Hey look at that first sentence.

If they're unsure about the future they could take a little revisit to their older days whether they're sure of it or not! Even though they said that they're not going to try rock anymore (hard to tell since they're so not straight forward) it could still happen that they do it in yet another way! :D

Mainstream pop is going downhill: 10 years ago pop music was waaaay more meaningful amd musically richer than today's.

I must agree. The further back you go the better it gets. Now pop is turning to unlistenable pop trash. To be honest I enjoyed some pop back in 2010-2013. Now it's only good, okay to me. And some (most) pop songs today are utter trash.

In a decade or so, the guys from Coldplay will be eating these words. I guarantee it.

He admits to doubts about what the future could hold for the band. But it could just be creative exhaustion. “It’s like asking someone to do 10 more push-ups when they’ve just done 100. If this was our last album, we’d be OK with it. At this point, we’ve said what we have to say.”

Says it all. The boys have been working super hard nonstop for the past 15 years. They're going mad from a lack of rest. Anyone would. Even they realize that for the sake of their own sanity, they need to take some time off to rest, relax, reflect, clear their heads and let it all sink in.

It's not unlikely they'll then look back on this period and cringe.

This doesn't have to be a bad thing. I get it, they don't want to be like AC/DC, ZZ Top, Creed, Nickelback or The Fray and make the same album several times over. That's fine. But does it have to be pop? Does it REALLY?

If they're going to go on this bender about the importance of evolution and contributing to music and then release another rather pop-laden record like GS and to a lesser extent AHFoD, than they're being flat-out hypocrites. I don't know who thinks Ghost Stories advances music. I'm not convinced AHFoD does much either. But if nothing else at least it's more talent-filled and diverse.

I'm confused by how they started out as an alt-rock band with a sound popular at the time, they took a complete left turn at Viva where it was unlike anything you heard anywhere, and then they want steadily back to the sound popular at our more recent time. What was that? Can we please do that again!

I need the jazz fusion

Very true. But in Coldplay's case I'm not sure a long hiatus can guarantee better music. I think when the world tour is over they have the perfect opportunity to end it, and they should.

The first 10 good rock albums of this year:

Pinkshinyultrablast - Everything Else Matters

Mac DeMarco - Another One

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - Chasing Yesterday

Pomegranates - Healing Power

Foals - What Went Down

The Maccabees - Marks To Prove It

Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase.

Wolf Alice - My Love Is Cool

Archive - Restriction

No Joy - More Faithful

I was just about to mention these! Perfect examples of what I conveyed in my post.

Imagine Dragons and fucking Bastille are even worse culprits in producing terribleness. And Coldplay are directly responsible for their rise.

I would not consider any of those bands actual rock acts. At all. Especially OneRepublic.

Anyways, you guys are overreacting just a bit to these comments. The band is far from over, and Chris' comments are 100% correct.

Would you consider Princess Of China or A Sky Full Of Stars rock? Think about it. Then consider if you would count Counting Stars as at least pop rock. See what I mean? Also, search up any of Imagine Dragons' early EP's.

Mainstream pop is going downhill: 10 years ago pop music was waaaay more meaningful amd musically richer than today's.

CP always took a look to mainstream and another to rock music. Now that their rock vein has gone they can only ruin their music formula by emulating this s* of mainstream electrodancepop of today, with embarassing lyrics and bad production

What on earth? How was pop in 2005 more meaningful than today's? Pop music has been the same since its inception. Of course it evolves, but the same idea is behind it -- to create popular music.

Here are some of the most popular songs from 2005:

Hollaback Girl

Candy Shop

You And Me

Beverly Hills

Pon de Replay

Rich Girl

Compare that to 2015:

Thinking Out Loud

Uptown Funk

Bad Blood

What Do You Mean?

Hello

Love Me Like You Do

If anything, pop music has gotten better. Coldplay has in no way "ruined" anything just because you don't think pop music is good. And seriously, half the "overproduced" songs I see a lot of people complaining about are there for a reason: to get people to dance and have fun. Did we learn nothing from the late-1990's and early-2000's?

Would you consider Princess Of China or A Sky Full Of Stars rock? Think about it. Then consider if you would count Counting Stars as at least pop rock. See what I mean? Also, search up any of Imagine Dragons' early EP's.

No, I wouldn't. But there's a large difference between 'pop rock' and 'rock'. Imagine Dragons, Bastille and OneRepublic are all pop rock, even if they do have a few 'rock' songs.

In 2004-2006 there were acts like Kings Of Convenience, Keane, Phoenix, The Killers, Gorillaz, Editors, Bloc Party in top 40 charts. To be fair, bad music never failed to be successful, but not in the way of today. And if I have to choose between Natalie Imbruglia, Gwen Stefani, Kylie Minogue of 2005 and Nicki Minaj, Miley Cyrus, Arianna Grande of today I'll always prefer the first group

Foals wearing really fast, personally i can listen it couple of times and then it's a downhill.

Also want to see any modern band with straight 7 rock albums selling 80 millions copies :)

Does anyone remember Killers, Franz Ferdinand, even Oasis - two-three rock rec are max today. Then you are going downhill.

And I doubt it's a coincidence Radiohead also left rock. For a good reason.

Pointless debate. No one is actually providing any valid counterargument to my comment challenging the band's absurd point of view.

They claim rock no longer has anything to offer so they choose to write unimaginative and inept pop trite instead. That is beyond nonsensical!

Well you said it, it's THEIR point of view, and opinion.. An opinion that many share, or flat out disagree with. In my opinion, rock music, in the strictest sense of the word is played out, even if there are bands out there that do it well, it gets boring fast.. To me at least. I prefer bands that go beyond traditional drums, bass, guitar and vocals. If you want a list I'll give it. But just a reminder to you and a few other cynical oldplayers, it's also YOUR point of view that there latest is "unimaginative and inept pop trite". A valid and reasonable point of view that is, not trying to say not to say anything negative about anything Coldplay do, just wish people would post their thoughts and opinions as just that, opinions. Otherwise you just seem condescending. That is all [emoji1]

Their pop isn't trite and rock doesn't really have anything to offer SO FAR. That's why you hear rock records nowadays either veering towards pop or making stuff that sounds like wanna be's. But I think in the next 5-10 years rock will resurge and become greater than it has ever been before. Now it's just in a lull.
