Coldplay say YES! to Glee

Coldplay's Chris Martin says no to Glee TV offer

Grumpy Chris Martin has been accused of being a high school spoilsport after he turned down an offer for Coldplay’s music to feature on hit TV show Glee.

Despite trendsetters Madonna and Lady Gaga signing up to music weeks at the Glee club, 33-year-old Martin apparently thinks his band is just too cool for school.

Show creator Ryan Murphy revealed the knockback as he lifted the lid on snaring the two US stars.

For Lady G, Murphy revealed: ‘We’re doing an episode that’s a tribute to theatricality. We reached out to Lady Gaga and she said, “Yes, I’d love to be a part of it’’.’

And he says friend Madge was even easier to tie down. ‘I’ve worked with Madonna before. I admire her greatly and I’m friends with her a little bit socially. I called her up and wrote her a letter and said we want to write up a tribute to you and she said yes and she cooperated in every way possible. We do ten songs altogether. Jane [Lynch] is going to do Vogue,’ Murphy explained.

 I love Glee and it's a hell of a long time since I was a crappy teenager !

I think it would have been fantastic to see them doing Coldplay.

^This.

I love Glee, and the show is witty, and just fun. Their vocal arrangements have mostly been terrific. Hell, if Coldplay can be butchered on AI, then why not lend themselves to a show that thrives on creativity and professionals who can actually sing? Lea Michele and Kristen Chenoweth anyone?

It's not like Glee is taking unknowns, either...they've showcased Queen for God's sake, as well as Journey, REO Speedwagon, Wicked, Neil Diamond, Heart, Rolling Stones, Beyonce..

Glad they said no!

Because I really really,.......really dont like Glee

I dont like it in a box

i dont like it with a fox

i dont like it with a mouse

i dont like it in a house

ixnay on the eeglay

I couldn't be happier they refused! I hate, hate, hate that show.

It says a bit about it here too http://tv.ign.com/articles/107/1077558p1.html

In this video, about 4:55 in, lead role Matthew Morrison says that he's like Glee to cover a Coldplay song. That's not going to happen, we know now.

I think they're silly to say no personally
Yes, I don't see why not? I really like Glee! It's kind of addictive.

Ditto. It would have taken their music to a new audience and shown that they can have fun. This will be fodder for those people who see them as pretentious rock stars who take themselves to seriously.

Lighten up, guys!

I partly agree. Why such a big deal?

I absolutely love Glee. I don't think they should have turned the show down completely - they should've give them the rights to do just one song - it would just be a friendly thing to do. After all, if Glee's been given permission to cover a Beatles song, no band can think they're good for the show. ;)

That said, I'm sure the boys had their own reasons for saying no, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. :D

I agree with you. That's how I think too.

Way to go! Actually Kimmie, you and I discussed it on Twitter. :)

I dunno if anyone thought this before, but when I've been watching Glee, I keep thinking Finn reminds me ever so slightly of someone. I think if his hair was red, he looks a tiiiiiiiiiiny bit like Phil :)

Glee-Finn.jpg

Haha, you're right! I think it's partly the quirky smile. :D

But the thing is, and judging your reply to this you probably don't agree: Glee really is a horrible show. And I'm guessing 99% of the people here agree.

99% is exaggerating a bit here, I think. We've already seen quite a few say that they like the show. What do you have against it so much?

Good point.

i'm glad the guys said no :smug:

If Coldplay says yes:

OHHH YAY. I love that show.. CANT WAIT TO SEE COLDPLAY ON IT. Their song is gonna sound sooooooooooooo good! Coldplay always does the right thing!

If Coldplay says no:

Ohhhh, thats great! Those guy's cant do Coldplay, they'd ruin it. Cause you know Coldplay is SOOOOO much different than all other music. SUCH A GOOD DECISION. Coldplay never goes wrong.

Give or take

yes: a few people saying NOO and doing slightly disappointed smiley responses

no: a few people say "but i wanted them to be on!!!"

And you've got yourself a formula of the comments posted on "this song will appear on this show" threads!

Someone please point out to me where other than the title they are being accused of high school spoilsports.

Agreed. Glee is mega popular right now and it would have made more people sit up and take note of the guys.

I love Glee and I would have been interested to see what song/songs they would have used and how they would have arranged them :D

Viva La Vida seems the obvious choice - lots of fun to be had with the woahs - but I also thought they might have fancied Fix You. The whole theme running through the show is that these kids will see each other through the hard times so Fix You seems quite apt.

My Coldplay Birthday Cake!

:laugh3:Hey Guys, It was my Birthday on the 12th of March and i went out for a meal with my family. After the meal they brought this AMAZING cake out which my girlfriend Natasha made!Just thought i would post it to show all of you :-)):laugh3:23815_1370925869663_1127235530_1119991_3653541_n.jpg

good glee is gay

besides the viva era is over you cant try and make it popular again just cause of a tv show

If Glee covered their songs it would lose the essence of Coldplay, i don't hate Glee but i am sure that i wouldn't like to hear i.e. Clocks covered, it just wouldn't sound like Clocks anymore...you know what i mean? i don't think is silly, they just don't want their music to be standardize to another level that they are not

WHHHYYY???!! i'm a HUUUUUUUUGE glee fan & i would love for them to do a coldplay song! i'm actually quite surprised that they'd agree to use vlv in an itunes commercial for the publicity & money, but they wouldn't agree to a show like glee, which encourages everyone, even outcasts, to follow their dreams in music no matter what anyone says. coldplay always does humanitarian projects, i'm just shocked they wouldn't agree to this!

Interesting point! I'd forgotten about the ITunes ad

My choir at school has to sing dont' stop believein'...the glee version. I want to hurt someone.

See, I LOVE Glee, as embarrassing as it is to admit, so i'd be interested to know why they said no, because like it was said earlier, it does make them seem a tad bit pretentious if you don't know how the band is. i was talking about this with someone the other day, and explained how they rarely allow their stuff to be used in commercials and stuff due to their attitude toward that sort of this, cause she kinda got stuffy about it, saying they thought they were too good for their songs to be used on the show  it may just be better PR to actually come out with a reason, if it's addressed at a later time...altho they're really popular enough on their own i suppose.

I dunno, i guess as a fan of both I just would like to know :) altho honestly, I'm completely cool with them not covering Coldplay...I don't think they'd do it justice and quite frankly, that would irritate me. Stick with overplayed bartunes (ie Don't Stop Believin :) )

  • 3 weeks later...
LOS ANGELES — When producers were making the pilot of Glee, they wanted to use a Coldplay song. The band denied them.

That was before Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Peabody awards; big-selling soundtracks and nearly 5 million song downloads; and visits to Oprah and the White House.

"They called last week and said, 'We want to apologize for denying it and, furthermore, you can have anything you want,' " co-creator and executive producer Ryan Murphy says during a recent interview on set. "I thought, well, that's kind of cool. That was the moment I was like, 'We've kind of arrived. We've done well.' "

What a difference success makes.

So does that mean that Glee will use a Coldplay song now?

So they didn't want GLEE to use their songs because it wasn't a very popular and successful TV show at that time?

I guess this way, more people will notice Coldplay.
