LoryABjerre
Six Grammys Surprises: Bon Iver’s Confused, Chris Martin Can’t Sing Sure, the Grammys belonged to Adele on Sunday night. And Whitney Houston’s death cast a long shadow over the celebration. But there were a number of other surprises that you might not have noticed. 1. Bon Iver rips the Grammys, still wins. Leading up to Sunday’s awards, Bon Iver (real name Justin Vernon) was unabashedly critical of the “biggest night in music.” He refused to perform, and then told Billboard: “We kind of said ‘f--- you’ a little bit.” That didn’t stop him from winning a pair of awards, including the prestigious Best New Artist. When he accepted honor, Vernon refused to ease up on his critique, making several references to all that talent that was not in attendance. “Thank you to the nominees, and the non-nominees that have never been here and will never be here.” He also described his discomfort with even winning the award. So will he be invited back next year? 2. Chris Brown may never rehabilitate his image. Brown took to the stage shortly before his former beau, Rihanna, an apt contrast since Twitter was as concerned about his violent past as his actual performance. Brown assaulted Rihanna back in 2009, and it appears few are willing to forgive him. While he performed, people of all backgrounds protested his very appearance on stage. They included journalism professors (“Boooo!,” tweeted Columbia’s Emily Bell), TV critics (“Chris Brown is immensely talented. Sucks he’s also such a d-bag,” tweeted TVLine’s Michael Ausiello) and fake Newt Gingrich, who wrote, “Make Chris Brown my running mate so I’ll look like less of a misogynist by comparison.” Yes, it was rough seas for the R&B star, whose brightly colored backdrop and swift dance moves did little to stem the tide of vitriol. As another tweeter put it, “Chris Brown just killed his performance and woman beater is trending on twitter? He trys his hardest and all everyone does is put him down." Sure, he won a Grammy. But what good is it if Twitter thinks you’re a jerk? 3. Kanye West was Missing in Action West, who angered many for interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 Video Music Awards, chose not to attend. Too bad for him, because he was a big winner. He won Best Rap Song, Best Rap Album, Best Rap Collaboration and Best Rap Performance (with Jay-Z). Jay-Z didn't appear either, but in Jay’s defense, he has a newborn son. What’s Kanye’s excuse? Maybe it was this: as Toure put it, “Kanye wins Best Rap Album for the best album in years but isn't nominated for Best Album. #JustWrong” 4. Coldplay’s Chris Martin is so bad at singing, people would rather listen to commercials. Coldplay is one of the best-selling bands of the last decade and its front man, Chris Martin, is thought to have one of the sweetest voices around. But, boy, you couldn’t tell on Sunday night. Martin, joined by his bandmates, performed alongside Rihanna and he never seemed to find the right pitch. Hey, it’s only his job. Oddly, a Chipotle commercial aired right after the performance featuring Coldplay’s music, prompting Time magazine’s James Poniewozick to tweet “Coldplay-based Chipotle commercial > actual Coldplay performance.” Many shared in the Martin bashing, including the Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl. Grohl and his bandmates picked up an award for Best Rock Album, beating out Martin and Coldplay. While on stage, Grohl took a swipe at those using auto-tune (read: Martin). Better luck next year, Chris. 5. The Beach Boys reunion underwhelmed. There was a great deal of excitement in advance of the Beach Boys reunion that would take place on the Staples Center stage, but by the time the California dreamers actually appeared, everyone was already up in arms. Why? Because Maroon 5 and Foster the People were forced to imitate the harmony and '60s folksy-ness of Brian Wilson & Co. Those two bands have had their share of success, but getting them to try and mimic the Beach Boys was a bad idea from the start. The Grammys often reaches across generations – as it did last year with the likes of Bob Dylan and Mumford & Sons. Some have hit, some have missed. File this in the second category. It’s unfortunate too, because the Beach Boys weren’t half bad. 6. The Grammys <3 electronic music While many prominent DJs have had worldwide followings for years, it took one person to get the establishment to notice: Skrillex. World-famous DJs like Tiesto and David Guetta attract less attention stateside, but when an American like Skrillex comes along, sweeping up domestic fans, everyone from The New York Times to L.A. Weekly wants a piece. It seems the Grammys took notice. They put Canadian DJ Deadmau5 on stage with Guetta, Lil Wayne and the Foo Fighters. But when it came to the awards, the Recording Academy gave Skrillex a clean sweep of the electronic/dance music categories, passing over the likes of Guetta, Robyn and Deadmau5. The one award Skrillex didn’t win? Best New Artist. So they aren’t fully on the EDM bandwagon, but at least they tried. link a jerk? who writes the review when he hates all the artists, made something else ! :veryangry2:
Wintergreen
Chris did say he was a bit ill recently, right? I chalked it up to that. To be honest a lot of the performances had weird sound quality to them-I think the acoustics in general were just not that strong for some reason, and a lot of people sounded "off" as a result. I still thought it was a good performance. I'd certainly rather listen to "can't sing" Chris than whatever the hell it was Nicki Minaj was doing. I liked "Princess" on acoustic-the original performance would've fit more with the overall show, but I'm glad they went acoustic for it instead and changed things up a bit, and the segue they did from Rihanna's own song to their duet to one of Coldplay's songs was a neat idea. I thought Rihanna and Coldplay were gonna share We Found Love like in the BBC Radio remember? Ooh, I've not heard this. Can this be found anywhere? *Is curious*
lafinion
I actually liked acoustic Princess of China. I thought it was a nice touch in between of very synth-heavy songs, and definetely it was something no one expected. To me Chris sounded very decent on PoC, I didn't hear any major flaws or something besides some variations to the original melody, usual in live performances. Rihanna wasn't flawless, but far from disaster too. Actually it was all nice, neat, interesting. Bombastic? No. I'm afraid the boys stepped into the field, where they don't feel very comfortable, thus the lack of chemistry with Rihanna and lack of contagious energy they usually show during their concerts. But, since Chris was ill, we can easily overlook it. Didn't listen to Paradise, tho. Just a bit tired with this song.

Wintergreen
Yeah, it's been shared in the Chris thread, but hey, always fun to see it again, it certainly fits here :). He looks so happy. That's enough for me.

ColdplayingfromKansas
ugh, i'm just going to say this because i feel as though i have to. Just because you're a Coldplay fan, it doesn't mean you can't dislike a performance or song. You're no less of a fan if you simply dislike one of the performances or songs. It's better to face the facts than be in denial about a group you love. So how can 50 people say that the performance was brilliant? Don't get me wrong, Coldplay are always above the standard of many artists but you can't say that the performance was a perfect 10/10. I don't want to further hate and list the reasons why because it helps no one but you must open your eyes. People aren't perfect, so don't make them seem perfect but saying a performance was 10/10 flawless when it noticeably wasn't. You've hit the nail on the head ;)

TraceOddity
I don't think Chris has ever used auto-tune. The writer is just another Coldplay hater. Chris voice wasn't bad last night. Paradise sounded alright. It made me mad reading review like that. Chris doesn't use auto-tune and almost never lip-syncs, that I know of. Even when his throat is sore, he'd rather do a REAL vocal and risk mistakes. Something I have no end of respect for him for.:)
twitchy517
The problem is Chris can't sing Paradise live. He's never been able to do it. He's a better singer than that, but when all people hear is an ehh Rihanna, and a off tune Chris, it sounds bad. I can't wait until they move on from Paradise promo, and go into CB promo. Karencorpse
I loved the Coldplay performance. Rihanna looked like a groupie from the 1970s (like Sabel Starr for example). Sabel wears a black dress like Rihanna and usually wears shorts like the ones Rihanna wore on stage. Rihanna also wore the same blonde hairstyle of Sabel and other groupies like Shray Mecham, Nancy Spungen. I think you should look up these groupies and see how much Rihanna copied their look. A good place to look is at whosdatedwho.com and other places.
LdySpace
I'm wondering if Chris is reading anything negative and taking it hard. Any fan knows that he is a worrier and paranoid at times and takes things pretty hard. I know he's a big boy and all of that, but I still can't help but get defensive for them/him and feel bad if he's feeling bad. I'm a softie. As for the reviews, it's funny how the are all over the place. One says they rocked the house. Another said it was a highlight of the evening. Another said it wasn't their best performance. One said Rihanna never sounded better (huh?) while others says both had pitch problems. They were all over the place. Honestly, I think it's been a bit overblown. It wasn't bad. I wish the Rihanna thing never happened, but it was fine. Chris came to the states just days ago and has had 4 big events to do....while not feeling well. I'm sure they cancelled the Australia trip next week because he's been under the weather and needs time to rest his voice and get well. To me, Dave Grohl was advocating actual musicianship....people putting their mouth to a microphone and singing and playing an instrument - which our guys do. I know fans have a hard time overlooking the cut down to Coldplay in their video. I know I did, but I think things have been decent between the two since then. As for auto-tune, all you have to do is listen to one Coldplay song and realize that Chris doesn't use it. I'm going to choose to believe that Dave was cutting down the studio tricks that some use to make themselves sound perfect and those that don't play instruments or sing live. I'll end with a pet peeve.....lip synching. These people get glowing reviews..."they sounded great!" Of course they did! Irritating.

SpittingFeathers
I dont think the Coldplay grammy proformace was bad at all. I dont know why people are being so negative. I wasn't so impressed with the Foo Fighters all their songs are sounding the same these days. Dave Gorhl cant sing live thats why he screams. TraceOddity
^^^Chris is a worrier and does take things hard, and he probably knew he made some mistakes. But they've said in interviews that they try and avoid reviews, so he's probably not seeing the negative things said. Not as much as us on the forum who follow every detail. :)
fru.overvad
Those saying Paradise is never good live, well you've clearly not been there and seen them play it in concert Totally agree! It totally sounds awsome live! It does! And why criticize Chris´voice perfomance at grammynight?? I just watched the show on youtube - and he sounded great (even though, he was sick!)!! - and looked great, I might add! But you are correct - Rihanna didn´t deliver - her voice performance in POC was off tune and weak. Chris had to carry that song on his own - and so he did! I just wished, they had song more of the song - but then again...Rihanna didn´t sound great live so I guess, it was fine, they didn´t do more... Coldplay deserved to win in all the catagories, they were nominated in...
MeriCri
Chris is my best singer and i think he's the best voice in the world .. I do love it! I'm full of respect and admiration for him, he put passions in his music and even when he made mistakes ... the power of the performance predoninates.. BUT, having said that, I can not deny that I didn't like the Grammys' performance at all. I'm trying hard to be positive about the change they're having but no... the loss of quality and passion, TO ME, is undeniable. I understand everything ... the succes, the tiredness, etc.. but I really hope they will take time to reflect about it!! I also hope that these criticisms (some extreme, actually) could help somehow ;) PS: hope to improve my english too.... :D
nvdmm
But I wanted to put my two cents in on the Adele conversation. She is a different performer; beautiful voice, with the ability to convey emotion, so much so, that I get chills and choke up every time she starts a song. She chooses not to be glitzy, glammy and over-produced like Rhi-Rhi and Gaga and Katy Perry and Nicky and on and on... I AM SO GLAD TO SEE THAT! She does her own thing, her own way. She was gorgeous and stunning, and I rather look at her standing on stage in a simple black dress singing, than seeing Rhianna half naked and dancing like a stripper. Boring some say, but that is RAW talent. Go Adele. She deserved every Grammy she won! wow you just made my day!:nice:
