LP7- "A Head Full Of Dreams"

Featured Replies

Honestly now that it's September (well, tomorrow is September), I feel the chances of getting either solid news or an actual surprise drop have increased quite a bit. Granted, it may not be tomorrow that it happens, but once we get closer to the two festival dates, I will truly be surprised if we don't hear anything.

I think we'll hear the single after the iheartfestival. A day later, they'll tweet "here's a new song from A Head Full Of Dreams." [emoji2][emoji24][emoji106]

I love a quote in this article

Coldplay’s last album ‘Ghost Stories’ was released last May 2014 while every song in the album was loved and repeated several times by Coldplay fans

Serious generalization there, is this what passes for music journalism nowadays? I can tell you from strong anecdotal evidence, that in fact most songs were not loved by the fans and were highly criticized yet the author seems to think all Coldplay fans are a single hive mind with no nuance in opinion. The author also seems to think that an Autumn release is a definite because of the Rolling Stone article, the stuff we have to trudge through as fans to find any genuine snippet of information on this album

That's exactly why I'm going to stop seeking for info in non-official websites.

What makes that even better is GS is probably the most heavily criticized of all Coldplay's albums, maybe even more so than MX

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who really loves everything they've tried so far

I love all their music too. I just love some songs more than others.

I'm not dazzled by absolutely everything they've done but I don't necessarily dislike any of the albums either. Besides, depending on my mood and what's going on in my life, I may prefer to listen to one album/era over the others for the time being.

I feel the same way! And now I know others like me (thankfully!). I'm not alone!! [emoji6]

For example I don't consider Parachutes to be the best by any means but sometimes it just fits where I am in life better than the others do.

I listen to a different album everyday. [emoji111]️

"No, I love them moar"

"NO, I love them moar!!"

I'll be honest, I was one of those ppl who thought everything they touched was gold. And like many before me I discovered new bands who made some better music. Long story short: Coldplay are not perfect, and acting like they are gets real old, real quick....

just my $0.02 as someone who's been there

Everybody knows they're not perfect. But it's not a crime to adore everything they do, is it? I mean, they don't/can't do anything wrong! Both as musicians and as people. For me, they're the greatest band in the world and probably the most down to Earth celebs (should we even call them 'celebs'?) I know. Then again, it's only my opinion.

I'm a bit thick, what's the difference?

I'm a bit thick, what's the difference?

What I said about them being perfect is the truth. No one is perfect. They surely have their issues, like everyone else. And what I said about them being unable to do something wrong, well, I can call that my opinion.

Perhaps there is no difference and I'm just an Ultra-Die-Hard fan.

That's probably it.

And that's what i'm getting at. Because you aren't the biggest fan just because you think you are. And that's okay. And Coldplay aren't perfect. And that's also okay. And getting into a pissing match over who's the biggest fan, and blindly loving whatever Coldplay do because you think it proves how much you love them; that's not okay, and its straight up embarrassing.

I'm not doing this to embarrass you. I'm doing this because I was you many years ago and being that way closes your mind and closes opportunities.

Oh, I see your confusion now. No one was in a "match" to see who is Coldplay's biggest fan. If you look at the previous posts you'll see there's no such thing happening. We were only saying that we don't dislike anything Coldplay has done. That's it. There was no "but I love them more" bullshite. I too find that pretty idiotic tbh.

Aaand, Coldplay aren't the only band I listen to (obviously). They're the band I listen to the most (and I call them my idols), but I also like James, U2, some Pink Floyd, Of Monsters And Men, some Imagine Dragons, Florence and the Machine, Dire Straits... and the list goes on.

PS: I edited my last post.

Huh, no one was in any match for biggest CP fan as far as I can tell from reading the posts.

I'm one of those people who love their first 3-4 albums most and don't really get warm with MX and GS (as all of the regulars here will by now know :)), but I have the feeling that I will never be able to like another band and music like I like Coldplay. And the reason for this are the emotional connections formed during difficult times. Also, in many years to come I may listen to other music more than to Coldplay, but their songs and melodies will always remind me of youth. It has become part of your life and will always have been a part of your life and your own person's history.

That's why Coldplay music will always stick with me, and I guess this may apply to others here too.

Tomorrow would be the perfect time to drop an album. The first of September. A tuesday. *taps foot impatiently

You know what should give us hope ? There has never, ever been a Coldplay album release later in the year than mid-October (Prospekt's March was November, but then it was not an album but just an EP to VLVODAAH which came out in summer), and the most common time for Coldplay album releases is summer...so yes, September would be perfect.

Tomorrow would be the perfect time to drop an album. The first of September. A tuesday. *taps foot impatiently

That's what I was saying. It would be a great way to start the month!

I used to think Coldplay were the best band in the world. They just had so many great songs! As the first band I loved I think this is understandable - but then as you discover more and music their basic faults start to appear as clearly their unique brilliance always did.

I know that I'll always love large parts of their discography because, put simply, Chris Martin might very well be the worlds greatest melodist. He's incredible. And that gives them such a solid base to build every song up from - granted, the ambition and creativity with which they've done this varies from album to album but when they get it right it can lead to some of the most gorgeously constructed, indelibly melodic rock/pop around.

They have such a knack for just nailing the instrumentation style and make the production compliment that perfectly. Take Viva, that sounds so grand and uplifting and it's because they got understood how to bring out the melodies perfectly. The same is true of AROBTTH and its intimate, intense style. Even when the overall album isn't great, they always get the overall sound right.

However it's when you get past the melodies and production that some cracks begin to show, especially when viewed in contrast to several other more artistically developed bands or artists, and you see why they are not in fact considered the best band in the world. The lyrics are trite at worst, mediocre usually, and great rarely. After you've heard Bob Dylan, it's hard to get excited about vague, surface-level lines like "How long must you wait for it? How long must you pay for it?"

The instrumentation often feels too safe for its own good - after you've heard heavier, more aggressive rock it's hard to feel thrilled by the guitar breakdowns Violet Hill. I often find myself wondering how much more intense and powerful such songs would be in the hands of other, less "soft" rock bands.

And then you have the creative nose-dive most agree they have taken post-2009, which has been discussed so many times I don't need to run over it again here.

And they're not the best band in the world because they never depart too far from the basic formula that underpins most music - Viva planted the seeds but they never allowed that creativity to grow. The great bands - Radiohead, The Beatles, even U2 in their own way created new and original ways of writing their songs, which Coldplay have never done.

However, despite all their faults, I believe Coldplay were - and still can be - an absolutely superb band, certainly not deserving of all of the hate and disdain then recieve from music fans generally. When they make the music compliment the melody there's no one else that can match the universal beauty and appeal of their songs. They're not perfect, but they're pretty damn good.

PS. All of this is, of course, completely off topic - but I think it's very interesting how your perception of a band can change over time, especially when you start appreciating others more and more.

Nice and thoughtful comment! I'd like to add to the fact that Chris is potentially the world's best melodist the fact that he has one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful, singing voices in contemporary music.

Personally, I like that they are a soft-rock band rather than hard rock, although I think the thing they excel most at is when their soft rock has a clear edge to it (Politik, Shiver, Cemeteries of London,...)

To me, elaborated lyrics without great instrumentation and melody in a song are somewhat worthless (if i want that, I read a poem), that's why I forgive Coldplay the sometimes not so great lyrics. Generally I believe, however, that the lyrical vagueness adds to the relatability and helps the songs create emotions when you listen to them, and I don't mind it. Sometimes emotions are better captured and reverb more powerfully in simple lines than in elaborated ones.

Oh, and if I were to compare bands by measuring their output of timeless and powerful melodies (which is subjective, but still), I have no doubt Coldplay would be the world's best band by far in that regard !!
