LP7- "A Head Full Of Dreams"

Featured Replies

Its actually pretty important to make it number 1 this time around, if AHFOD gets number one Coldplay would become the only band since The Beatles to have 7 number ones albums in a row.

The only band since The Beatles!! Do you know how huge is that?? That's a milestone for a band and something that is not that easy to conquer. So i want this album to be sold like a whore, to reach number one and to coldplay to reach the beatles, and you know what else? I want LP8 to reach number 1 to and Coldplay to beat a world wide record that hasnt be broken since the fucking 60s

Ahem...https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oasis_discography

And then there's the small matter of Noel's two number one solo albums, , meaning he has had 9 consecutive number one albums.

^^^That tribe of reprobates doesn't count, as they did it using the same three chords over and over and over and over.... :P (Joking, I actually quite like Noel and his solo stuff)

I don't believe 1D are capable to win Coldplay in album sales. They are more popular and have a strong fandom, but still. Coldplay albums are always success in sales.

1D can. Their last album debuted with 387000 copies sold while Ghost Stories launched with 383000 copies.

And their fans will always make sure they debut at #1.

I agree that quality > sales

But the labels and the band (yes the band) care about this stuff because it looks good and it will allow them to better advertise the tour.

A good album is the most important thing but sales are also very important.

Let's only count Oasis's albums as a band, not Noel's solo work. They released 7 LPs, right? All of them debuted at #1. But Oasis doesn't exist anymore and it's highly unlikely for them to get together again and release an 8th album. Even if they do, I'm almost certain it wouldn't debut at #1. Coldplay's 7th album is coming very soon. If it debuts at #1, they'll be the third band to release seven consecutive #1 albums. BUT, they will release an LP8 (we all know they will). If this album debuts at #1, it would make them the first ever band to release eight consecutive #1 albums.

This might be a bit confusing, but I hope you understand what I'm trying to say [emoji6]

Not confusing at all. I hope this happens. It would be great! [emoji3]

No that's perfectly clear, and that would be a cool record for Coldplay to have. Although it seems unlikely Oasis and The Beatles are the only ones to do it though. Probably more.

Although as Noely G himself once said - "Just because you sell a lot of records doesn't mean to say you're any good. Look at Phil Collins."

Haha. Why's that?

That's something worth of research. Could someone please do it?

Here's a little something about Coldplay: they sell a lot of records AND are good. Yes, some of their albums are better than others. But name one band whose entire discography's quality is equal. You can't, because there is none.

I want Coldplay to become the first band ever to debut all albums at #1, while still managing to maintain quality (something they've been able to do so far).

Eminem too has sold 7 number one albums, i didnt say coldplay were the only ones ahaha but they are between the ones that can make it

Something they were able to do for the first 4 albums you mean ;)

No, but in all seriousness, if they could do that it would be immense. I see Coldplay taking a well deserved break after LP7 though (Sort of like Keane who are not broken up per se just on indefinite hiatus so they can explore other things) . So we could be waiting a while for that dream to be realised.

That's where our opinions differ. While you may think the last two albums' quality is not as good as the first four, I actually quite like them both, bc both albums explore new styles and sound directions, while maintaining the quality and without falling into forgetfulness. But that's a conversation for a different thread.

It would be really amazing if they did this. I too think they'll take a break after LP7 (just not as long as Keane's), but I know they'll return full of inspiration and creativity for LP8.

I know, I was only joking :laugh3: I'm actually quite fond of MX (But don't tell anyone, I have an Oldplayer reputation to uphold around here! :P)

Not all of Eminem's LPs have debuted at #1, so Coldplay is still the most likely artist to beat such record [emoji5]

Great quote.

Although Phil Collins is a better musician than Noel will ever be. Noel is a great songwriter, but just listen to Phil's drumming with early Genesis or Brand X if you don't believe me. The guy is one of the best ever, hands down.

Noel is just a lot smarter. Phil ruined Genesis and embarked on an extremely annoying bubblegum pop solo career, and in doing so he ruined his reputation.

But we're not here to talk about Phil Collins.

Jonny and the cake, you raised a good point. Coldplay reaching that huge record would be pretty exciting, and I would be happy if they did. But first, I want a good album. And a good album reaching number one is by no means unheard of. This year, great albums by Blur, Noel Gallagher, Muse, and Kendrick Lamar have been on top of the UK charts. Coldplay can do it too.

Notice that this year there haven't been many (or any) 'big' releases (Rihanna, Adele, etc), so many albums could easily reach #1. But if Coldplay release AHFOD this fall, I've got to say it will hardly debut at #1, simply because of Adele's 25.

I hope it didn't come across as I was saying Coldplay aren't good; clearly I think they are, I was saying that even if they do get the record - it's meaningless really.

Do you really think Coldplay has the most consistent discography ever? Sorry if I misread you there, that sounds like what you're saying.

To be honest if you don't think Coldplays quality has dipped at this point, I doubt you ever will. It's great to love a band that much, and I'm sure you'll get your wish! :)

Phil is certainly a better musician than Noel, as most musicians above a certain basic level I'd say. But the difference is the songwriting. Noel was a mind blowingly good songwriter in the 90s. After cocaine, his biggest hobby back then was writing classics. But as you say, off topic.

I agree the record would be nice to have, but I don't really care if they don't get it. I'd love to see them beat Adele though, as unlikely as that is.

Sorry for the double post.

I for one would actually hope that Coldplay's album totally flops in the charts. Which won't happen, but I'd still love it to happen. Here's why:

- No.1 in the charts nowadays means it must be an extremely poppy record, cause that's what draws people in and would alow it to compete 1D and other chart-topping crap

- a flop in charts would probably make the band wake up to the fact that all success is not granted just because they have the name "Coldplay", and might induce them to actually go for more artistic value again and feel the hunger to prove the world that they do great music like for the first 4 LPs, which could increase their quality again over the next few LPs

I think you may have misread me there. I never said they had the most consistent discography - they obviously don't, no one does. I was just saying that they have always topped the charts till date but still managed to maintain quality. That's where we enter the realm of my personal opinion. I think they've maintained the quality, but changed their style/genre. I know 99% of this forum disagrees with me on this, but I really don't care about that. Coldplay will never disappoint me, even though I would love them to go back to rockier sounds (like I've said many times before). But if they don't, I won't mind [emoji6]

"I live to see the world"

I like how they were more complex in some aspects in their music. Like in Spies (alternative version)

love the fact that almost everyone is sure that Adele's new album is going to top the charts. How she has built that confidence among fans & casual listeners is truly amazing! Is it just because of the quality of her previous works or real info about the upcoming one?

& I am here with jellyfish legs hoping AHFOD would not be terrible (quality-wise, especially lyrics-wise) as I suspect it might be :\

100% agree with you there. We need only look at one of Coldplay's biggest influences, U2, to know that failure can be a wake up call for a band. After Rattle and Hum came Achtung Baby! And we know that Coldplay is capable of so much more than bland pop songs like ASFOS. We need only look at their first 4 albums for proof of that! ;)

Oh please! We've had this conversation so many times on here over the years. It's not gonna happen! They might do a reggae album, they might do some rap or r&b or whatever is popular in the next few years; but the Coldplay of old is no more.

All hope is not lost though. With Ghost Story and Major Minus they proved they're consistent in providing at least one song on each album which is reminiscent of their older work. And this one song is the only thing I'm looking forward to with AHFOD ;)

Interesting discussion which leads me to think that maybe the record label will push back or push forward the release date of the album to avoid competition with Adele.

Yeah, but as a Coldplay fan I have faith that they will do another album in the vein of A Rush Of Blood To The Head. It won't be AHFOD, It probably won't be today or tomorrow. But I hope that one day (probably a good few years from now) that they will go back to the style that made them so great.

I think it's a discussion that's worth dragging up over and over again because as fans it's our job to decide what is good and to criticize the bad.
