jer123
I was guessing my reaction if AHFOD was the very first Coldplay album and I was not a fan and this was the first time that I hear them, and perhaps it could be: AHFOD: Sounds good, I'm feeling happy now. It give me expectations to hear the rest of the album. B: Man, what a good song! (At the end: Are you trolling me? LOL.) Gonna repeat it. HFTW: Is this really Beyoncé? How have these guys gotten a collaboration with her? I'm not a fan (and maybe don't know more of two songs by her) but you know that she's a star. Ok, the song will be a radio hit for sure but it's too generic for me. E: Lovely ballad. But I think it could be much better. AOAL: I heard that song on the radio yesterday. Well, it doesn't kill me but it's catchy, so I think I like it. F: Good pop song. Their voices match very well. K: Oh, truly nice! Love it. AOO: Hey, I do like this one. Unexpected good sound. XMTS: Err… Well, it's a hidden track. AD: Good feelings. This is a very nice and relaxing song. CS: Is it the first track on repeating? Ah, an interlude, ok. UU: Wow, I love the lyrics and that tune. Great ending! Also, if I was japanese: M: Sweet lyrics. Now I'm feeling good. Short opinion: (6,5/10) Not bad to be honest. They could become one of the best pop bands in the future. EDIT: After few listens, I say 7/10. Yes, they are young and good. I wanna see what they'll make for their second album. They are young and good...second album!? heelsrule1988
The Strokes/Tame Impala vibe that it gives off, the gradual build up that Coldplay is known for, really cool bassline, Jonny's sparkling and epic guitar riff at the end, the awesome abrupt ending and chirping bird transition into HFTW. Also it's the most experimental and least-pop (most-indie) sounding track on the entire record, which seems to resonate well with a lot of Oldplayers. The beat is pretty cool too. Also, something I personally really love about the song is how Chris is voice is really soft and deep prior to the chorus, and how everything seems to lift up during the chorus (the "come on rage with me" part) including Chris' voice, the guitar, bass, and drum beat. I guess that stuff that just isn't me because Birds does absolutely nothing for me. It feels very boring and plain. I agree the abrupt ending is hilarious... but otherwise, I just can't get into it. likeafire
1. Army of one 2. Up and up (this could easily be number 1 too) 3. Fun 4. Amazing day 5. Everglow 6. A head full of dreams 7. Hymn for the weekend (can see this being a success in charts, mainly cause Beyoncé is on there but also sounds like a generic pop track) 8. Birds 9. AOAL ( no idea why they released this song first, one of the worst on the album) 10. X marks the spot (why just why) My album rankings: 1. AROBTTH 2. Viva 3. Ghost Stories 4. X and y 5. Parachutes 6. AHFOD 7. MX (the only one that I can't listen to again)

I agree the abrupt ending is hilarious... but otherwise, I just can't get into it. It's all good. Music is a preferential thing. It's based on your perception and how you interpret the song to be. Most people seem to have felt Birds, but everyone has different musical tastes overall. :)

Sparky
A Head Full Of Dreams -------- (Joins the likes of A Message, Oceans, Spies, What If. Top songs but not among the elite like Fix You, Viva La Vida etc..) Fun 9.0 (Fantastic!) Birds 8.5 (Epic ending) ----------- Amazing Day 8.0 (Those strings! Could of been at the top with clearer production) Up&Up 8.0 (Would be higher if it wasn't for the production :/ Noel and Jonny :) ) AHFOD 7.5 (Strong ending) ----------- AOAL 7.0 (Fun song but no ETIAW :p) Army Of One 7.0 (Growing on me!) Everglow 6.5 (Like it but prefer the live version by miles) X Marks The Spot 6.5 (A unique addition to the discography. Very different but wears off after a bit and poor lyrics) ----- Hymn For The Weekend 5.5 (Awful, awful lyrics. Good melody though and catchy. Prefer Beyonce over Rihanna) All Albums --------------- X&Y 9.5 (Masterpiece. Clean production, energetic, anthemic, no weak links. Their best album imo) AROBTTH 9.0 (Another Masterpiece. Best album lyrically. Simple. It lacked a little bit of 'edginess' in some places but almost perfect.) VLVODAAHF 8.5 (Very good album. Perhaps a bit under-rated at the time but emotionally the most expansive album with CoL, CSC, Viva, Violet Hill, SW and DAAHF) Mylo Xyloto 8.0 (Very colourful. I would say patchy in places - UATW, UFO, POC - but production was good and songs such as ETIAW and Paradise captured the atmosphere of the album very well) Parachutes 8.0 (Thinking about it, I think it's the strongest set of opening and closing tracks out of all the albums. Don't Panic and ENL - if you ignore LIFL - absolutely class. weaker 2nd half of the record but very strong debut!) A Head Full Of Dreams 7.5 (Very good set of songs, with the exception of a few. Could of been so much better if the production was much cleaner but there weren't any surprises there.) Ghost Stories 7.0 (Great album on first listen. Didn't have a lasting effect though. The atmosphere on Oceans, Midnight and All Your Friends is incredible, in addition to the AROBTTH esque Ghost Story but songs like Ink and O get very bland/boring after repeated listens.) Blockflote
You sure that's not backwards? Yep, pretty sure. Those bottom albums are good, but they don't have a clean production and some of them have weak links between the whole album. Also, I look for how they manage the concept in each album: some are stronger.

Would be interesting to know your thoughts as to why.
