U2 frontman Bono is to edit The Independent newspaper for a day to highlight the issue of Aids in Africa. The singer is already offering ideas and commissioning articles for many sections of his edition of the daily UK paper, to be published on 16 May. The Independent editor in chief Simon Kelner said the paper would be "challenging and innovative". Half of its revenues for that day will be donated to Product Red, Bono's initiative to improve healthcare. A spokesperson for Bono told the paper: "He is tickled to be let loose on such a great paper. He's enjoying using the talents of its journalists to explore issues that are vital to him." The Independent has become …

Dear ONE Member: One year ago, I stood on the stage of Live 8 in Philadelphia, the biggest concert event in history, talking about something that was only an idea at the time. It was the idea that, with the stroke of a pen, eight of the world's leaders could change the future of millions of the poorest people. Five days later, they did. That moment resulted in unprecedented commitments to the world's poorest people for debt relief, fair trade, and better development assistance. Join me in asking our leaders to keep the promises America made one year ago that, if kept, will save 4 million lives by 2010. July 4th is our Independence Day. It represents the da…

There are currently 20.8+ refugees who need help and protection; 9,000,000 of which are children. Visit ninemillion.org to see videos and photos of their stories. A $25.00 donation will put a young girl through an entire year of schooling, and help pull her out of a life of abuse and violence. "Help them play, let them learn."

Being in New Zealand makes it hard for me to support the CCC, but Is there going to be a project in Aussie? I'm Going to the Coldplay Concert this Saturday, and I thought it might be fun if we did something? Just an Idea, maybe you guys can consider, since I'm sure some people are going to their concerts in Australia?

Hi all! I just realized this morning that the Isle Of Wight Festival is nearly upon us! Earlier there was talk of making some CCC banners/posters, fliers, etc promoting charities/charitable work, and the club in general. Perhaps a flier to pass out to audience members to hold up during a specific song (like the Happy Birthday Chris signs earlier this year). If there are enough people going and enough people interested to help organize something hasta pronto, perhaps we could make this work!! Please use this thread to post ANY ideas you may have. If you know someone who is going, please direct them here. For those of you who are able to pass out fliers, or do what…

From WarChildMusic Help: A Day In The Life 9 September 2005 Helping children affected by conflict all over the world What is it like growing up in a war zone? Each day, children in Iraq are caught in the crossfire of conflict. Children die, all the time. Every day, Iraqi children die of malnutrition caused by 15 years of war and sanctions. Each day, Iraqi children are scattered to the streets to earn money: to scavenge for their families trapped in poverty. Every day, Iraqi children are orphaned. Worst of all, every day, an Iraqi child realises that if his life doesn't change, their future could be even harder than their past. Ali is 14. He lives in Bas…

Do you have NBC? If you do, then put on the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams TONIGHT at 6:30pm (that's USA Eastcoast time, ;)) Dear : My journey began in Africa in 1984, when I went to Ethiopia. On my last day there, a man handed me his baby and said, "Take him with you." He knew in Ireland his son would live, in Ethiopia his son would die. That was the moment my journey began, and today, it's continuing across Africa. I spent the last week listening to and learning from the beautiful, proud people of Lesotho, Rwanda, Tanzania, Nigeria, Mali, and now here in Ghana. Every person I have met only makes me more hopeful, more convinced that Africa is rising. …

In Mali village, Bono talks cotton trade By Lesley Wroughton Mon May 22, 5:57 PM ET DAFARA VILLAGE, Mali (Reuters) - In this village about a two-hour drive from the capital Bamako, rock star Bono meets local chiefs and elders and says American cotton traded on the international market has an unfair advantage over Mali's. "There are cotton farmers in America who need to meet you," says the Irish rocker and activist. "This is my biggest desire because I think they will understand you better because I think American cotton farmers would respect how you work the land so well with little water." The 90-year-old chief Julien Traore, sitting opposite the rock s…

Here's a letter I received from Matt Damon... Dear ONE Campaign Member: I just returned from a 7 day trip to South Africa and Zambia. What I saw changed my life. I want to tell you about my trip and let you know about billions of dollars in development assistance that is at risk this week. Each day, I saw the devastating impact of AIDS and extreme poverty, but I also saw the incredible work being done to save lives and give people the tools to provide for themselves. I visited a facility that reduced, by half, the chances of a mother transmitting HIV to their child. I met a 24 year old woman who told me that there was a good chance the anti-retrovirals she w…

Midge Ure reveals his line-up for charity single 20 years after original smash hit Midge Ure has revealed he wants Coldplay's Chris Martin and Tom Chaplin of Keane to sing the opening lines of the Band Aid III single. 'I fancy getting Coldplay and Keane to sit at facing pianos across the studio to open the song,' said Midge last night. 'Wouldn't that sound amazing? 'I spoke to Fran Healy of Travis yesterday and he's well up for taking part too.' Other big names signed up for the new version of charity hit Do They Know It's Christmas? include Noel Gallagher, Jamelia, The Darkness, Dido and Blur's Damon Albarn. Dear All, I am a primary school teacher in Tutbury, Staffordshire, and last month, one of my pupils, Joe, died in class from an asthma attack. He was 9 years old. At the school we are organising a memorial auction to raise money to create a fitting and lasting memorial to Joe, the "Joe Midgely Memorial Playground". As Im sure you can appreciate, this will be very expensive, and funds are currently at the £5000 mark. I was hoping that some of you would want to donate something to the fund that we could auction and raise some money in Joes memory. Here are some links to the local papers reports on Joes tragic death. http://www.burtonmail.co.uk/detail.asp?ca…

Best-selling band Coldplay is to allow one of its songs to be used for an advertisement for the first time. The band, led by Chris Martin, who is married to actress Gwyneth Paltrow, has steadfastly refused to allow its music to be used for marketing purposes so far. However, it is now permitting charity Cancer Research UK to use the song “Fix You” on a forthcoming campaign. Paltrow’s father, the director and producer Bruce Paltrow, died in 2002 of pneumonia and complications associated with a recurrence of cancer. The charity would not confirm the campaign but said that it would make an announcement in a few weeks. Coldplay’s publishing rights are handled by BMG …

When Coldplay released its second hit album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, the band said that part of the environmental damage caused by its production would be offset by the planting of 10,000 mango trees in southern India. More than four years after the album's release, however, many of Coldplay's good intentions have withered in the arid soil of Gudibanda, Karnataka state, where the saplings it sponsored were planted. The idea of saving the world while making music was proposed by Future Forests, a British company since renamed CarbonNeutral. It declared that the scheme would soak up carbon dioxide emissions and help to improve the livelihoods of local farmers. …

Coldplay, The Darkness and Travis are set to re-record Band Aid’s hit single — to raise millions for Africa’s new victims of famine. Frontmen Chris Martin, Justin Hawkins and Fran Healy have told Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure they will drop everything to make the charity track. Now Midge and Sir Bob are talking to Noel Gallagher, Robbie Williams, Jamelia, Blur and Dido about joining the stellar Band Aid III line-up. Do They Know It’s Christmas? 2004 will be recorded in the next few weeks. The song is already odds-on favourite at bookies to be Christmas No1. Midge Ure, 51, is masterminding the third Band Aid line-up — backed by Geldof. Chris Martin, 27, has told …
