I'm going to address the whole disappointment issue one last time and then I'm done. Because the whole thing is irking me, I just want to have one last say from my perspective on things and then I'm just going to tune it all out.

I talk a lot, so it's under a spoiler. Read or don't read.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion. That's fine. I know some people were expecting more than we got, especially ones that spent a lot of time and money to get there, and I think that some disappointment inevitably follows from there. I also do agree that Coldplay HQ probably shouldn't have told us one thing was definitely going to happen and then not deliver on it. But the way I see it, they probably thought that we (or most of us) would actually be more excited to actually be in a Coldplay video than to talk to members of the team, and thought they were trumping what they originally promised us. Some people have speculated that the whole event wasn't thought through, but I choose to believe that they honestly had the best intentions at heart. I can't blame them for that. Maybe they got it wrong for a lot of people, but I certainly don't think for a second they thought "haHA, let's lure them to the boat with grandiose lies so we can use them as free labor in our video!"

I guess what frustrates me most about this whole debate are two things: one, that people, even disappointed people, aren't seeming thankful or happy about the opportunity we did end up having, which was being in a fricking Coldplay music video. OK, we were extras, and OK, we probably won't be that individually visible, but regardless, the experience is one that hundreds of others would have gladly taken, and to say harshly over and over that we wished we hadn't gone at all because it wasn't worth it, at least in public, is disrespectful both to the people that would have gladly taken your place and the people who worked to put on this event for us.

I also just think it's beyond the pail to rant about how we had to pay for our own drinks, how we didn't get signed stuff, or how they all had "no idea what they were doing" with regards to us. OK, yes, they probably could have afforded to give us an open bar, and we do know they have stacks of pre-signed stuff laying around to pass out to people, and those would have been nice touches. But I think it's pathetic to latch onto such trivial things and wave them about as failures when the overall experience was both an amazing opportunity and a good time if you let yourself have one.

I've seen a lot of people say that they're going to have a word with Debs about all this. Everyone should do what they're comfortable with doing in whatever situation they find themselves in in life, I say. But I'm also going to be harsh and say that I think that's beyond inappropriate. If you went to a big party thrown by a friend or something and ended up having a disappointing time, would you then ring them up the following day and say "wow, your party sucked! Here's why I had a bad time and here are all the ways you could have made it better"? I obviously understand any email sent to her would be more tactfully written than that, but that's the essence of what I've seen people say they want to get across to her. I just think it's completely unnecessary to express negative sentiments about something they graciously set up for us, spent money on, and gave us the opportunity to be a part of, even if you did end up being disappointed. It's bad manners, if nothing else. It's the exact opposite of a thank-you note: it's a "nice try, but all your work totally let me down" note. And I can't imagine many people would write a note like that to anyone else that threw them a party or gave them a gift or opportunity. Most people would probably swallow their disappointment and shrug it off, and regardless of how high anyone's hopes were for this, I think the same should be practiced here for the sake of manners and good board-band relations. They'd probably never try anything like this again for us if they got wind of even half of what people have been saying on here, and that just ruins it all for so many people that didn't get this chance.

I guess the reason I wasn't disappointed is that I went into it with an open mind. Yes, I did expect Miller/Matt/Phil, but I also understand that once the surprise was brought to light, logistics kept them from being there, and I understand that. Logistics and responsibilities often win out over desire, and Phil told me later that he really wished he could have been on the boat with us, and that he planned to be, but then he found out he was actually supposed to act in the video and couldn't have possibly been there. To me that's a completely viable excuse. I also just plain old had a great time participating in the video. Yeah, it was cold, yeah, we were just extras, but I had a great time talking to people and being a part of something cool and big...especially something that means so much to me. Being an extra in a feature film or having a bit part in a commercial wouldn't mean nearly as much to me as being an extra in a Coldplay video would, because I love and appreciate everything Coldplay do so much, and they mean so much to me.

I know people are going to say my positive attitude on all this is just because I got to be on set all night and meet the band and get stuff signed. Think what you want. But upon leaving that boat, before going to set and before I even had a hope of meeting any of the band members or Phil, I was damn glad I'd come down for that boat party. Not only because I actually had a good time and got to be even a small part of something that means so much to me, but because I also appreciated what I believe they were trying to do, whether they succeeded or not.

I'm sending a thank-you note to Debs from me and no one else. Everyone else can do what they want, and maybe they already have, but I urge you to think about your actions before committing them and put them in context of another similar situation and what you've been taught about manners.

Chelsea out.

Thank you. I wasn't there, but I'm glad the majority of people who were on that boat still see it that way.

I still hope the band will at least consider doing more such events for the community in the future, but after all the negativity that has been going on here, I think it'll take some time.

"... but I choose to believe that they honestly had the best intentions at heart." I totally agree with that statement and I could understand if the band members were disappointed with us the community in return when reading what has been going on here. :\

well I'm super grateful for the experience.I LOVVVVED IT and can't wait for the video

I think people feel a bit offended because others criticised them for expressing an opinion. Just because it's Coldplay it doesn't mean all is perfect, things are seen through rose-coloured glasses etc.

... but I admit myself that it may have gone too far. I suppose the lack of disclosure by the band/management/etc. was the main problem.

Thank you. I wasn't there, but I'm glad the majority of people who were on that boat still see it that way.

Chelsea out.

Chelsea, can I just marry you for being so smart and nice?

Or would that be too much... :uhoh:

See, I am so happy that you went :wacky:

You're awesome.

Well, it just means that they probably won't do anything involving coldplayers directly in the future as I doubt they want to risk high expectations, disappointment and bad feelings again. Having fans in the video isn't something they had to do and, to be honest, after the complaints, if I were them I wouldn't bother again either!

I am really sorry that the boys have been informed of all the complaining. They do so much for fans and good causes it's a shame that the feedback they will be told about is people's complaints. I wonder how they feel now meeting and having photos etc with coldplayer fans at the bakery knowing the complaints that they made... I hope they also realize some people had a great time and were happy to be in the video.

I know... and that's what scares me a lot.

I don't want them to judge every person on Coldplaying, or the majority of us, as being upset or selfish about opportunities like this. :\

It makes me really sad...

Thanks Chelsea ... I couldn't have put it any better.

And getting paid for dealing with logistics everyday, I know what it's like when suddenly unforeseen changes to a proper and well-thought-through plan occur ... :(

^ Exactly. People just don't understand.

I mean, I don't have a logistics job or anything, but I know things come up. And sometimes, there are just no way around them!

Nicely said!

And yes, you all are going to be a part of a Coldplay video. I don't understand how can people not appreciate that.

This is maybe going to sound awful but people who traveled half of the world or even 10km didn't give their last dollars/euroes/pounds/ or whatever for this. So I think you should all be thankful for everything. You went to London, you met people from the board, you probably had a great time singing karaoke and YOU ALL ARE IN COLDPLAY VIDEO!

I'm sorry for even saying anything, cause I wasn't there. But I do think that most of the people that didnt have a chance to do this are just JEALOUS of you, so at least be happy for that!

I know, they don't understand the big gift they had been given. I mean, really.

I still can't fathom that people could go up to them and say that right to their face.

1. it must have been so unbelievably awkward

2. Poor Chris is probably paranoid and self conscious now.

3. They probably are never going to ask us to be involved in anything.

4. They might start thinking just because we are from coldplaying, we'll be stuck up fans, and demand more things from them. With seeing as people could walk up to them and say that, justifies their views...

i am actually shocked that some people were disappointed about the boat trip! i mean i wudda done anything to get on that boat and i know alot of people here who put there names down and didnt get to go would have appreciated it more!

not only where u part of, i guess, history but ur part of the new coldplay video and im guessing you heard wedding bells before anyone else!

i guess next time somthing like this happens it goes to people who would appreciate it more then others cuz these opportunities dont come often

I was shocked too.

When I was first told that people walked up to them and told them right to their faces I was shocked, angry, embarrassed, and really anxious.

I know I'll appreciate it, more than anything in the world...

I really really agree with you Chelsea. I can't believe how selfish and stupid these people are. They got an INCREDIBLE opportunity for which a lot of people like me would have died for. They didn't get the Q&A? Well first of all they have to understand that this is the real world, and they can't complain if Phil really wanted to come but had to stay on the set because of the delayed filming, or because there were logistic problems.

THEY ARE IN A FUCKING MUSIC VIDEO WITH COLDPLAY.

Coldplay made them a much bigger gift and surprise and not only they don't seem excited at all, the continue to moan and complain as well. I think it is really selfish and unfair.

To us, because if you're a TRUE coldplayer you wouldn't complain about not having what you expected or thought, you'd have been EVEN HAPPIER to be immortalized forever in a coldplay video and to become PART OF THEIR HISTORY, and to the boys, wich have done something that no other band and proved themselves once again to be ultra-generous and close to the fans. They were awesome and so sweet to give us this opportunity, I can't believe that some people don't realise how lucky they were and were so selfish to complain with the boys and debs to. They were given and amazing opportunity and not only they didn't appreciate, but they spoilt it for other people who were hoping that something like this might happen in the future again. I really can't believe it...

@Nic: :cheesy: okay! :hug:

^This.

:hug::shy:

well I'm super grateful for the experience.I LOVVVVED IT and can't wait for the video

SEE I LOVE PEOPLE LIKE YOU TOO

:D

I just came home from London. I have to say that I feel so happy and privileged that I was a part of this boat trip. And that I will be a part of a Coldplay video.

I still can't believe how nice they are. They didn't want some random people to be in their video but their real fans! WOW for that!

And if it weren't for Coldplay I wouldn't have met so wonderful people! I never thought that they could grow even more on me!

SEE I LOVE PEOPLE LIKE YOU TOO

:D

aaww. Thanks! It's just something few people can say they have done.Plus I think it's unfair for those who didn't get a chance at all.I don't really care if I didn't get to meet them.I wouldn't have known what to say plus they're normal people so...I want their music more than an autograph

well I'm super grateful for the experience.I LOVVVVED IT and can't wait for the video

I like it that there are people who loved everything about the trip. Like you two and few others. :D :D :D

It must've been amazing :wacky:.

This.

I can't wait to hear Christmas Lights on Wednesday. :wacky:

You guys are so lucky to have not only heard before anyone, but to be the in video and everything! :D

Chelsea, can I just marry you for being so smart and nice?

Awww, thanks, Nicole

I haven't read this whole thread, though...did FANS actually go up to THE BAND and tell them they were disappointed? I imagined it was just someone like Debs who checked this thread or received rude emails. Where do people learn such poor manners? :stunned:

Hey, I have covered the demo version we heard last year, what do you think?

I didn't hear anything like that. :anxious:

All I heard was that people went up to the band and apologized and thanked them.

Awww, thanks, Nicole

I asked myself the same question as I didn't read the whole thread too!

After having read some pages, the only word that came in my mind was sad: it's just sad that some fans have been so disappointed :(

Other then that, it's just so cool to be in a video from Coldplay and hear the song and know the lyrics of the song before anyone else! I'm looking forward to watching the video and hearing the song  Plus, you meet some other Coldplay fans and that must have been great too!

I would've been overjoyed to have been there and do anything they wanted! :(

I'm with Marie and Petra.

I had a wonderful time and I'm truly thankful for the opportunity to be there and become part of Coldplay history. That is the biggest honour I could ever, ever be given.

And if it has indeed got back to the boys how disappointed some people were... Then I'm truly sorry that they have to hear about it. I bet they'll never hear how happy some people were about it and that's devestating.

On a lighter note. We appeared in The Sun newspaper today  (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/bizarre/3248408/Coldplay-let-slip-showboat-secret.html):

COLDPLAY tried to keep the location of the video for their festive single a secret - but were found out when they picked a Thames barge.

The lads also let off a load of balloons and had a troupe of ELVIS backing singers for the promo to Christmas Lights, out on Wednesday.

CHRIS MARTIN said: "The idea for the video was like a magical, surreal theatre show with loads of tricks packed in.

There are fireworks, violin-playing Elvises, levitation, a 100-strong chorus on a riverboat and SIMON PEGG. It was very cold."

Yeah. They called us a chorus and all. We must have sounded amazing :smug:

Just so everyone knows, I was one of the fans who expressed disappointment. BUT I never NEVER emailed the band or went up to them to express that. Perhaps, there are some people who did. I do think it's fair for some people, including myself, to have been disappointed. But in retrospect, I now feel I went in with too high hopes. This was my fault. Having had a bad couple of months, I wanted the night to be spectacular. I don't feel like a jerk saying it wasn't for me. But my expectations weren't fair to the band. They did a really cool thing letting fans be in a video. And I'm really so happy I could be apart of it.

I do think some people shouldn't be so antagonizing though when people express disappointment. I don't think that was very fair of the few people who did it. Everyone is a different fan and I felt really bad about what everyone was saying.

Now I'm home form work and I have to say "Best night ever!!!!!"

Not only starring in a Coldplay video, but to actually see it being made, then to meeting Phil and Chris.... just unbelievable.

I thought I would share my photos on my Chris encounter and a scan of my picture I received from Phil - which Chris signed the back of with a personal message just for me!!!!!

I loved that Chris asked if we were all okay, the crew handed out hand warmers to ensure we stayed warm and when Phil came over and told us we looked amazing on the boat.

But the best moment ever; Chris and Phil began walking towards us; getting closer and closer...I rushed to get my camera ready and gave it to my husband (the guy in the shorts who had been waited so patiently with me) in case I had a chance of a photo op. To our surprise they handed out the awesome signed photos; then Chris unexpectedly moved the barrier and came and stood with us as he signed the reverse side of the photos he has just given us. He asked us if we were okay, and said he had time for one photo op, but luckily my husband snapped a picture of me with Chris as he signed my photo.... what a moment. Also shook his hand and told to him to "Keep up the good work; and say hi to the others."

Totally amazing & awesome night. I was so nice to put faces to the names of the Coldplayers, I loved meeting you. Also a huge thanks to Ian, Jen & SueDeNimes for running the competition and organising everyone. Also thanks sooo much to Coldplay HQ for organising the Boat Trip for the fans in the first place.

I also thought I would post the poem I wrote as my reason for being on the boat :D (Hope thats ok)

I've written this little "Reason in Rhyme" why I would wish to come. If this doesn't tug the heartstrings, it won't be for the want of trying!

"The Trip - An Ode to the Joys of A Cruise" - Lisa (aka Piggy)

Although it may be a 'Rainy Day' and most likely we'll all 'Shiver',

Imagine watching 'Daylight' fade, as we urge the "Sleeping Sun ' to hush.

Just sailing on the 'Crests of Waves' together,

Do you need 'Proof' that this would be 'Such a Rush'?

It should be only 'Green Eyes' I'd see, not green faces,

A 'Glass of Water' for my sea-legs, feeling queasy!

Should have paid attention to the 'Warning Sign',

Long for the comfort of land's 'Gravity'!

But 'Don't Panic' dear friends the Captain won't get us 'Lost',

We travel at 'High Speed', hopefully not 'Swallowed by the Sea'!

We 'Talk' of great times, exclaim 'Viva la Vida',

My 'World Turned Upside Down', now in ecstasy!

Soon the 'Clocks' would signal the end of the trip,

Now we face 'The Hardest Part' together.

Sad faces as we head back to 'Square One'

But knowing we're 'Bigger and Stronger' than ever!

'What if' I had the chance to shout 'Yes' I will come!

Be allowed to travel with the 'One I Love',

There'd be 'No More Keeping My Feet on the Ground',

'The Escapist' in me desires to join in the 'Reign of Love'.

So 'A Message' 'For You' my 'Brothers and Sisters',

'I'm Easy to Please', so consider my boon

It won't just be 'God Put a Smile Upon Your Face', I would too,

So hopefully I'll 'See You Soon'!

I had a fantastic time and feel honoured to have been chosen to be a part of their new video. Like I said above I loved meeting you, though I was a little shy and embarrased to keep repeating my username (Should have thought of something better). It's been awesome seeing the boat pictures on the newspaper websites :D now i'm even more excited to see the finished video. Also I think its great that we can still submit questions for the Q&A that didn't happen......now all I need to do is try and think of a good one lol

ApproximatelyInfinite So glad you managed to meet Chris and the band, I was there with you before you left for the toilet hunt; I was lucky Chris came over when he did, if it was 10 minutes later I probably wouldn't have still been there.
