Another's Arms

Featured Replies

Do you mean the "whooooooooo" noises on the backing track? That's inspired by some types of hiphop/trance/trap music (not sure which). I think it's a cool homage to that and fits the overall R&B-inspired feel of 3 of the songs we've heard so far.

Yep. I don't like it. And I would not like Coldplay to turn into a hiphop/trance/trap band.

Well.....keep an open mind? Paradise is vaguely inspired by hip hop (stuff like Umbrella), ETIAW and Midnight have roots in electronic type things... etc. Just because they're using inspirations from new places doesn't mean they're losing their identity. I think it's a very creative repackaging of that feel IMO. It adds to the intensity. And if you go back to old albums there's all sorts of odd but perhaps less adventurous influences. Like Chinese Sleep Chant via My Bloody Valentine, Speed of Sound via Kate Bush, A Whisper = something..but it's weird no?, Shiver via Jeff Buckley.

I wish the oooohs were done by Will

And what's with the annoying "vrommm" on like every 1st beat? (That's my best impression of the sound if you know what I'm talking about) it's just so repetitive and annoying. That's what I think.

But the song is slowly growing on me

Yeah I heard that too. Not sure what the sound actually is but it's a bit annoying.

The "vroom" part reminds me of Phoenix's Love Like A Sunset

could the female voice be the voice of a young boy?

Er, I don't know - a bit funny sounding boy?..

Midnight is still my favorite of the new tracks, but I was pleasantly surprised with Another's Arms. I loved the tune of how Chris sings "another's arms", only problem was that one minute into the song he had already said it 15 times. I must admit that I am one of those people who definitely feels that the lyrics of this album are beyond sucky so far. Just way too simple, and we saw this with Paradise more than we did with their earlier stuff, now it's getting worse.

On the other hand, I love everything else about the song. The vocals in the back, the bass, the guitar effects, very nice.

Okay so I just re listened to Another's Arms after the news of Chris and Gwyneth's split and I really listened to the lyrics and what I got out of it was this:

When Chris says, "when the pages rip right through me" I think that's a good reference to the rumor in the magazine of Gwyneth cheating. Then when he says "when the world means nothing to me" I think he's referencing the fact that he is in one of the biggest bands in the world and has all these great fans, all this success and fame, but it doesn't mean anything to him without her. Its just something I really got to thinking about. I just wanted to share how I interpreted Another's Arms now.

Or maybe it's a 'Dear John' letter?

Do people still write those?

Am i only person who loves the vroohm bit - What a big part of Alternative music is about is challenging the listener and having something that sounds and then finally pays off - its hard to explain but you see it in chord sequences, you have a normal chord sequence and then an odd chord that maybe sounds odd and for a second you dont like it and then you get the chord after which brings it back and then you learn to love that part. Its like having something bad to happen to you and then when it gets corrected it feels better its all a payoff. The vroohm bit does that to me it sounds odd and then finally sounds cool, ive explained that horrendously but I hope you get what i mean

oh and i also think this along with Midnight is the best song so far, magic doesnt do so much for me and always in my head leaves me a bit bland. I love the soprano at the start

Got to wait and listen to the studio version. But sincerely, I am not liking it. I don't see the point.

Amen.

Amen.

LETS PREACH IT

The opening of this song is very, very reminiscent of a Cirque Du Soleil type production. I love it all.

I think it's pretty great to be honest, it enhances the mood by giving it a kind of dark and brooding undertone. It sounds like a muddled heavy sigh or groan, definitely what someone in this situation would be prone to do out of pain and sorrow.

I don't mind the lyrics. This is my favourite song so far.

Good Catch. I definitely didn't pick up the "pages" reference. This is a great example of Coldplay's abstract lyrics that are open to interpretation. In the context of the album, "pages" could refer to personal notes, the bible, anything. If you dig a little deeper though, its obvious that your explanation fits perfect.

That's what I love about Coldplay. Their lyrics can be interpreted in many ways. Some of the songs on Ghost Stories may have simple lyrics, but they have a deeper meaning. It makes me appreciate the songs that much more.

I always heard "pain just" rather than "pages." idk though

Same

I can see pain as well. So it's either, "When the pain just rips right through me" or "When the pages rip right through me". I like both either way.
