Round 1: MX/Hurts like heaven vs. Always in my head- (tie - both magnificent openers with celestial instrumentals, and openers to their respective album's themes

 

Round 2: Paradise vs. Magic - Would have to go with Paradise here - that bass line is so killer, and the strings that open the song really get you hyped up. FWIW, Magic is a perfect single for the stripped back sound of Ghost Stories. It's almost a tie.

 

Round 3: Charlie Brown vs. Ink (No competition, Charlie Brown all the way, Ink sounds like a B-side from Viva Era - though a decent album track. CB is just heavenly especially with that opening sound effect, Jonny B riff, and that closing piano.

 

Round 4 Us against the world vs True Love - UATW for the win again, that opening with the organ, and Jonny arpeggios, and chord progression into just a blissful Coldplay acoustic song that morphs into a grand symphony of all the quartet. True Love is good, though it sounds like Taylor Swift's Love Story. I think the production on this was off, especially with the useless Timbaland bass drum beat (which didn't add much in my opinion. Jonny's solo is one of the highlights of the song, but not enough to save it.

 

Round 5: MMIX/ETIAW Vs. Midnight - Wow, tie between the two - ETIAW is an outstanding track, and true take of Coldplay and EDM in a sense. A great anthem, with lyrical complexity, and interesting chorus. Midnight is in another realm, perfect departure for Coldplay, and they pulled it off well.

 

Round 6: Major minus vs. Another's arms I like both, equally, but I think Another's arms wins out by a hair - the production, the synth sounds really elevate this song for me. as for Major - it is coldplay's Big Brother song, and they pull it off, with Jonny shredding throughout the song. great lyrics - I think this might be a tie, now...

 

Round 7: Up in flames vs Oceans - Oceans - love the drum beat effect in this one, and the synths later in the song. Up in Flames is great too, again especially Will's drum beat, and Jonny's solo - but will go with Oceans for now

 

Round 8: A hopeful transmission/Don't let it break your heart vs. ASFOS - ASFOS - it's catchy lyrically, and a true crowd pleaser. DLIBYH is good too, another near tie for me especially with a hopeful transmission reiterating the same chord progression/motif from MX.

 

Round 9: Up with the birds vs. O - Up with the birds - just love the transition from piano to the guitars and the soaring chorus, then with a simple piano riff to close. Fly On is great, but I wish there was a little more instrumentation, love the instrumental part of it - but am rating the actual song portion of it.

 

 

Im a huge fan of MX and GS - but MX wins out for me obviously (even UFO & POC are great songs in my opinion, despite the traditionalists or old school Coldplayers naysaying).

Ghost Stories completely trumps MX. MX was kind of a mess tbh. Still love both albums though.

1. Always In My Head - Tough one though as I do really love MX/HLH

2. Magic - so easy, Paradise got boring fast, lyrics mean nothing, yeah Magic's lyrics are simple but at least they have meaning.

3. Ink - I really like this song despite not liking it first listen. My problem with CB is the same with Paradise, it just does nothing for me, I do like the piano outro however.

4. Us Against the World - Most of the comments I've seen are picking True Love over this, like, really!?

5. Midnight - I was a bit torn on this one but I think I've made the right decision, I really did appreciate what they were going for with this one.

6. Another's Arms - Like most of the tracks on MX, Major Minus just didn't do anything for me. I really do like AA, very hypnotic.

7.Oceans - UiF is possibly one of the most boring tracks I've ever heard. Oceans is beautiful.

8. AHT/Don't Let it Break Your Heart - As much as I do think ASFoS is catchy and nice, it's just very un-inspiring and I much prefer DLiBYH.

9.O - By far, UWtB would have been an absolute astounding track if it weren't for the annoying bird sounds and if it didn't close the album with the words "Oh yeah".
