It's quite special hearing Jonny sing on Don't Panic :) [emoji14]arachutes:

According to Jane Weaver, Coldplay contacted her regarding sampling a song for their latest album.

Then I had an out of the blue phone call from Coldplay, who had sampled one of my songs for their latest album!

x

Since Coldplay has not included any samples by Jane Weaver on their previous releases, it is a good guess that this is for AHFOD.

the thread for the discussion is here.

Phil Tan (mixing engineer) mentioned in a Full Sail interview that he is mixing for Coldplay, LP7!?

really? care to share the link?

if that is the case, looking at his credits, confirms the very pop-ey orientation. coupled with rumored stargate production, not sure what to expect.

edit: here it is. coldplay comment is at the very beginning. didn't watch more than 5 minutes, so could be mentioned elsewhere too.

I'm a bit disappointed really but it was to be expected. Where we go from here is anyone's guess really. Are we going to get an MX type record or something else entirely.

I feel like it's better not to hear this LP7 for me... :embarrassed::worried2::dizzy::wreck:

I wonder if we'll get many acoustic tracks on the album. I think the idea of a pop-oriented vibe doesn't necessarily mean over-produced and bland like everyone suspects. Uplifting and high spirited acoustic tracks could work really well. An example is the stripped down Strawberry Swing, simple yet effective. Definitely something you can "shuffle your feet to" [video=youtube;XqafijMtRas]

I think Strawberry Swing-type songs are the best thing we can hope for at this point . . . which is totally fine because Strawberry Swing is excellent :P

But as we get more and more "news" I'm feeling like I will like this album less and less. I didn't care for MX or GS and it makes me sad that AHFoD might join them

But! I will wait to pass that judgement until I hear the album. It's not fair for me to already start labeling it as something I won't like

Bitterly disappointing news. I'm not overwhelmed by sadness though. Unfortunately in the past few years I've learnt to expect the absolute worst with Coldplay. What I do find sad is the fact that I've grown so apathetic and removed that I kind of don't care about their output anymore.

Phil Tan's production history is almost identical to Stargate's and notably he has never worked with a band, only pop artists that don't actually write their own music...so I am really disappointed to hear this. But is that good or bad? I mean, maybe the band will ensure quality pop rock, but on the same token, this could be the ultimate Chris takeover ready to sky rocket Coldplay into pure pop status, losing credit as a rock band entirely.

Not to discredit the many other mixers and producers, Rik and Markus will definitely be back, and who knows, maybe even Eno... But I am scared the record will be synthetic with these ultra pop influencers. Even MX, despite the pop, had some rock mixers and producers. Not confirmed yet for AHFOD.

Be still my heart... So sad but trying to be hopeful...

Edit:

The positive news is that if they are mixing, then that means the album is almost done..

you know when you think about the kind of people that helmed the recordings before, this is quite a change of direction. in mylo, coldplay did embrace pop, but with eno and dravs. and it was quite a polarizing album with the existing fans. now this. looks like a complete pop takeover. down to the production and mixing teams. it does bother and worry me too. i feel like the band may be aiming for chart domination more with this lp. the team selections so far indicate that.

by the way, another thought i had was, most of us assume that the next chapter after lp7 will be in possibly more a left-field direction. but what if lp7 is an indication of what coldplay would become after? that made me sadder..

Chris has stated that they want to 'break barriers' within the music industry. I don't think it will be 'fully pop', they'll be seeking to mix styles and experiment. My main concern is that it doesn't end up rather ordinary, like 'A Sky Full Of Stars' was imo. It's great live, but lacked 'gusto' and energy on the studio version, which I think was the result of trying to please everyone.

Also, I think constant categorization will set yourself up for disappointment and impartiality against all of their upcoming work, because it might not be 'as heavy' as some previous Coldplay albums. They've hired a very experienced production/mixing team and could produce one of their finest albums.
