appleguyjoe
They say that music is an international language of emotion and within emotion is experience. Coldplay has different messages in it's songs, ideas ranging from love to loss to acceptance to heartbreak and so on. What is it that makes you so connected to Coldplay? We are fans for a reason, we love their music. Their music has meaning to us. What is Coldplay's meaning to you? What does their music mean to you? Jonny and the cake
i actually dont know because a) i find chris' lyrics cringe worthing, either you can't understand what the fuck he's talking about (rainy day) or they are so corny that you just dont wanna look at them (another's arms), there few exceptions but that's it b) the instrumentals are good but that's it, there are bands that when i listen to their music i can feel it in my bones, that doesnt happen so often with coldplay c) their production, that luckily has improved over the last few years, isnt the best either, most of the time the wall of sound is so badly produced that you can't tell an instrument BUT they are the first band i fell in love with 5 years ago, the first band whose bandmembers' name i learnt, first band whose discography ive finished and carefully collected in my pc folder, first band i saw live et cetera they are this safe band i can go to when other bands lack their "familiarity" i may not like them musically as much as i used to, because i discovered bands that fulfill my musical need in a way that coldplay can't, but i love them so much as people, that i cant give up on them. Jonny, Guy, Will and Chris are such great role models to me and that goes beyond music so i guess that's "why coldplay"
jc90
I've been meaning to make a similar thread for the longest time, especially since the negative comments have been abundant starting around the mx era. I didn't get why ppl would still follow a band if they disliked them to the degree that is showed through their comments in album review threads. Personally, I still like their music from their entire disorgraphy. And I find it better than most artists out there. Admittedly, I long for more LP2 style songs but again, I can stomach the recent era far better than an album from another artist. I would liken this question to the question of why I follow the sports team that I do (despite their history of poor results). In a nutshell, I've been too invested in the band (and this particular sports team) to give up on them now. In a way, they are like my children. And though they are not perfect, I love them and wanna see the growth in them until the day they DO rise to the top of their industry.

beastwars
They're the first band I truly fell in love with 10 years ago. I think I like them (especially their first 4 albums) because they revealed the most true part of the human personality, they've been for the most of the time true, without wearing masks, without having the fear of being uncool because they were showing their fears, their flaws. I really appreciated this, I find it honest and courageous, and I also love the way they use their musical roots to create a fresh sound that's original and personal. I'm realising that the artists that influenced them (not them all :D) are some of the best of the history of contemporary music and this reflects on their music giving it a sense of classicism. They're not the best band of the world and maybe they won't ever be, but still they found their place in history, and not everybody could do this.

I ran away
I don't care what they're singing about, the only reason I like Coldplay is because of the nice melodies their songs have. Finally someone saying this ! I grew up listening only to classical music and got to despise most of modern pop/rock music. What I was subjected to on the radio was so shallow, commercial, bland, meaningless....that I never ventured to try and discover other sounds. Getting to know Coldplay opened up a whole new world for me, the world of indie/alternative rock. Their earlier works are so heartfelt and honest, they have a strange pure beauty to them. OK, the lyrics are sometimes not the best, but for the most part I actually love them ! It's this lyrical vagueness coupled with emotion that makes the songs relatable in a range of life situations and moods. The emotion itself, actually, is a reason why I like them, no other band makes me feel that way. And then come the two most important things for me: The melodies, and the vocals. Let's face it, Chris has (had?) one of the most beautiful singing voices in non-classical music. For me it is even the most beautiful - the sound, the softness, the vulnerability. And I am somebody who hates "songs" that just consist of a sound carpet floating about, never developing a melody. I love memorable and powerful melodies, be it in classical or modern music and whatever the instrumentation may be. And Coldplay has wonderful and strong melodies in nearly all of their songs, not just one or two hits. This is a remarkable feat for which they will be surely for always remembered. As to the question why one follows them if one doesn't like the recent work, well, it is sad to me that their direction has changed but as someone else said here, it is the first (and maybe only) band whose sound I so fell in love with, and I guess we all have a lot of emotional connections left and will continue to have them. 42Escapist
I was going through some tough personal times when I discovered X&Y. I had heard and liked the hits but Coldplay were the first band I set out to discover on my own. The rest of my music taste was kind of given to me by my parents, haha! :) So on one hand Coldplay have a lot of sentimental value to me but their music also has this unique beauty. Despite how much they have changed their sound, there is still something uniquely "Coldplayish" that has stayed with them. Lastly, I often find that I can fit a Coldplay song or album with just about any situation in my life. They are my soundtrack.

The Adversary
It's very hard for me to explain, It's like a feeling. Coldplay is just intuitive to me. I honestly don't know what it is, whether it be the ambiance of Parachutes or the boldness of AROBTTH. There are other artists I like a lot, but I just like them- It's nothing like the sheer love I have for Coldplay. Coldplay's music just speaks to me on every level, listening to it is like a journey through every emotion and the melodies put me in a state of ecstasy. It's actually a very spiritual experience. Everyone has that one band I think. For some it's The Beatles and others it could even be One Direction, for me it just happens to be Coldplay. It's funny really when you think about it, we don't really have choice about what tastes we have when it comes to music. We think we do but we don't. Its just innate in us. Some people utterly detest and loathe Coldplay... I'll never understand that just like I'll never understand how some like Death Metal. It's a mad world really As cliche as it may sound, Coldplay is honestly the soundtrack to my life. The raw emotional power of Chris's music has honestly changed my life. Through the good and the bad, Coldplay is always there to reflect my emotions back at me. It's honestly very cathartic for me. We have very few constants in our life, but for me music is always there and Coldplay's music will always be there. I'll cherish this band for many more years to come.
iccp
This is a really good question. I'm not exactly sure how to answer it but I wanna try anyway. I started listening to them at a time when everyone I knew who was my age used to listen to pop or RnB or something. I slowly stopped listening to RnB and rap and started getting more interested in rock music. Some of the lyrics to their songs really went straight to my heart and I felt some kind of connection. They described certain times in my life and I found their music deep and "clean". Coldplay was different from what was going on at the time and little by little I started exploring their music more often. Listening to them was a bit like finally finding my own space. WeddingDom
Coldplay is the only band that can make me cry and feel sad or happy anytime, I enjoy Chris' voice a lot, the melodies are simple and sometimes relaxing, I love the 4 of them, I love most of their lyrics. I've been listening to different bands recently but to me nothing else compares to Coldplay :dazzled:

appleguyjoe
For me, Coldplay has helped me through many difficult times in my relatively young life. First and foremost, Chris' voice is simply amazing and I would agree with a statement above that it is one of, if not the best singing voices in contemporary music. Second, I would disagree that their lyrics are cheesy. I mean yes, a few songs in MX and GS weren't the best lyric-wise, but that doesn't mean that they can't be relatable. Third, I would also say that their melodies, instrumentals and overall feel is better than much of the modern day pop music that my generation primarily listens to. Finally though and most important, there are so many songs though that I have a personal connection with because it perfectly matches what is going on in my life or what I'm feeling at a particular time. Square One and "you just want somebody listening to what you say, it doesn't matter who you are" helped me to come out. X&Y (arguably my favorite album) had many songs that I related to when going through my first love, the song A Rush of Blood to the Head as well. Prospekt's March when I felt alone. Don't Panic when I wanted reassurance when dealing with homophobic parents. Us Against the World when I felt it was my boyfriend and myself against everyone else. Songs like Paradise, Viva La Vida and Up With The Birds for more upbeat moods. Some songs for more deep thought and philosophizing (Glass of Water). No matter what's been going on in my life, Chris and the gang have been there. This is not to say I don't listen to other bands (Keane's Disconnected exactly explains me and my parents, The Fray's Shadow and a Dancer explains my current relationship). But somehow, Coldplay has always been there in some of the most emotional and impactful times in my life and will continue to be there to be one of those most influential bands/artists in my life. As stated above, they are the soundtrack of my life. The beauty of Coldplay is that they can be the soundtrack for many people's life's because of a combination of factors, including their lyrics to which we connect to so well. I've once been told that music is emotion. Chris and his gang does such an excellent job in connecting to our emotions in our own ways.
SprayCanSoulGuy
I always loved them. But I usually listened to their singles. I still remember seing the hilarious Talk video on TV back in 2005 or 2006. Then I fell in love with their Viva singles. But during the Mylo-era, which I proudly lived through, I loved ALL of the successful singles! CB, ETIAW, Paradise and Hurts Like Heaven! But it wasn't until 2013 that I started to like them more. After Atlas I became more interested in them. In 2014 I listened to some Coldplay songs on my old teacher's iPod (i know, LOL)! Then I checked out their albums and now I'm a fan. Turns Coldplay's always been in my blood. They always cheer me up. Especially Chris! He is SO funny!

They seem to know me ..you understand? Some if their lyrics are just like they wrote them only for me. In combination with the melodies it's a way to express my mood ..I feel much better when I listen to their music. They helped me through dark times they gave me hope and still do. They wrote the perfect soundtrack with Viva la Vida just when I passed my exam. Chris is my hero because he is as " uncool " as me . They have my age. Because of Coldplay I have met so many lovely people. .Coldplayers / Fans. [emoji4]
