Kaleidoscope EP

has it been discussed yet that ryan tedder said in a grammy interview that he has been working with stargate and coldplay? correct me if i'm wrong, but he didn't work on ahfod, so this has to be about the ep. then stargate again?? hope not..

:worried:

I haven't watched any Grammy-related things, so this is the first I'm hearing of this. OneRepublic has a few okay songs, but the possibility of that mixed with Stargate for a Coldplay release just makes me nervous. Hopefully this is either 1) not related to the EP, or 2) defies my expectations if it is.

i was about to say the same thing, that i don't think ryan tedder said/meant that he was working with Coldplay, but that he was working with Stargate and explained who they are by relating them to Coldplay.

phew :) good. carry on people. let's forget about stargate for now.

Yeah he definitely used the past tense

when people think Coldplay is just a depressing band: no, seriously everything with them is butterflies and rainbows :P

^ They've literally not released a single "depressing" song since, like, the Viva era :joy: Unless you count maybe Always in My Head or something

i mean really ALL of GS is pretty depressing, but you're right in that i don't think so many people these days believe Coldplay are just a bunch of sad whiners. probably thanks to all the rainbows and butterflies :P

Oh boy, Coldplay isn't the only one who's cleaned out their sound to sellout to the mainstream. Just listen to the new Imagine Dragons, Linkin Park, All Time Low, OneRepublic, UGH.

In fact, now that Coldplay have said stuff and soundchecked things to do with the EP, I'm more confident with this release now. Please return home guys. I need you.

Dont think the general public thinks of them that way anymore. I still think the whole 'coldplay is gay' thing is out there though :/

my only thought is... didn't most of those people have a super mainstream sound before anyway? it's just that the style has shifted over the past decade

i have to resist starting that debate again

I actually liked the new Imagine Dragons song imo. Much better than I Bet My Life and alot of Smoke + Mirrors. But both Linkin Park and All Time Low have sunk into a territory they should have never gone into. All Time Low is now part of a label called "Fueled by Ramen". Lately, that label has been influencing their newer bands to make something poppier, such as The Basement. Now, Linkin Park went into the worst direction possible for their newest one. I'm afraid there is no excuse for them besides the fact that they want to pander to the newer generation and the current trends in the industry.

PoC (more like a lead up), Up In Flames, AIMH to an extent, yes, True Love, Fly On kinda. O and O Reprise especially. Even in the newest album, Everglow and Fun.

I don't know how many of you guys follow Linkin Park, but many fans don't like the single they've released today. I myself seriously think that One Direction can do better than that. But whatever, just goes to show that you don't need Stargate to make something bad. The bigger issue is for the band not go into the "easy route" of carelessly putting together same-old same-old. This is why it's not necessarily a good thing if Coldplay releases the EP as soon as possible. I'd rather have them take their time to do all the hard work and release something of substantive quality. We all know that Coldplay operate best when they have enough time to work on the album. If they would have given AHFOD another year of work, it would've turned out massively better. Even Coldplaying user @MC01Coldplay, after having spent 1 year editing AHFOD, made a significant improvement on it. (In case you haven't listened, check it out here - it's the only version of AHFOD I listen to nowadays.) So all this to say: I really don't even mind if they release the EP in December. Take your time, Coldplay.

But of course, I will still be checking the ASCAP website for any updates because I'm still as excited as all of you ;)

hey thanks, that really was intention to improve AHFOD the best i could

I suppose PoC could be considered a sad song lyrically, but as far as the soundscape goes it's kinda the opposite *shrug* And to be honest, I'd forgotten that UIF existed until now because I haven't listened to it for literal years lol

Anyway, I agree with you. It's just that (excluding GS), the "new" Coldplay consistently releases more happy poppy songs than somber, serious ones.

If they release it in December, it might as well be a new album :P. Remember, this is basically the Prospekt's March of this era. Nothing special since they've already recorded most of the songs, so its literally made just for the fans and to keep the hype going.

Why is new pop bad? I can understand not liking Katy Perry and bubblegum artists like that but Coldplay are still making diverse pop like they always have. No song on AHFOD sounds like another on the record.

AHFOD: Pop rock edm anthem

Birds: Fast paced guitar-filled tune that grows to the very end

HFTW: The most bubblegum tbh, but at least it includes horns and a cool guitar riff at the end, not mentioning the queen of today's music.

Everglow: a freaking piano ballad with a guitar solo at the end. You can't complain about a Coldplay piano ballad. They've been making em for years lol.

AOAL: something new and groovy. Lyrics are kinda crap lol but it's a new thing that I'm glad they did.

Fun: Beautiful song that's forgotten a lot. Sure the lyrics aren't the best, but the circling guitar riff and acoustic drums make an excellent soundscape.

Kaleidoscope: Best interlude ever! Cool sounds and it has purpose!

Army of One: I think it's cool they made a song based on a vocal riff. Drums are the best on the album. All that's missing is a guitar solo I think. The riffs at the end are cool and all but I think Jonny could've easily made a masterful solo for this one. I won't even talk about XMTS because it's just bad.

Amazing Day: Easily one of the best Coldplay songs made. Beautiful strings, strong bass, catchy riff and beautiful lyrics

Color Spectrum: yeah, kinda useless.

Up&Up: The definition of a Coldplay song. Working hard and seeing the good in life and never giving up. Plus 2 solos in one song!

I think sometimes we use the past to compare to the present and forget how far this band has come. To call them sell outs is kinda dumb because everyone says that when their favorite band changes. People change. Fact of life. You don't have to like it, but don't let it blind you from the possible good sides of the change. The band has never made an album where the songs all sound the same. This album is just as diverse (though not as good) as Viva. This band has really grown since 1998 and it's a shame to call their success a sellout because they're doing what they want and it's working. People have said the same about other bands (Fall Out Boy, Green Day) when those bands are still topping charts. So you can complain about a change in sound and just forget about how your favorite band is having success, or you can party with them. Your choice

wow ok we're starting this again

I agree with you 110%. Just because a band makes poppier music down the line doesn't make them bad every time. Bands like Coldplay like I said in my previous rants,) The Limousines, Bastille and The Temper Trap just to name a few have gotten more mainstream with their latest records, but they are all still good records. I mean sure, Thick as Thieves doesn't equal Conditions, but it doesn't fall to far behind (in my opinion)

Bands like blink-182 and Green Day however, changed their sound and got worse. California had some good tracks on it (Cynical, Left Alone, Home is Such a Lonely Place, Bored to Death) but overall it was a flop. Same with Revolution Radio (in my opinion)

My point is that change doesn't mark a difference in quality. Look at Childish Gambino. Because the Internet is one of the greatest hip hop albums of the past couple decades. But then he flipped his sound 10000% and made "Awaken, My Love!" which is basically a funk record. It's probably one of the best albums of 2016 easily (in my opinion)

So guys, please give the newer albums a chance. Dismissing an album just because it has drum machines and synths and simpler melodies or chord progressions is incredibly pretentious. #teamnewplay (in my opinion...)

so, as we rapidly approach March with no announcement as of yet, anyone interested in changing their guesses for a release date? :P or do you think they'll not even announce it, just release it?

well they said they have finished or at least come very close (adding the final touches) to finishing it, so I expect an announcement soon. If no announcement is made, my guess is late March at the latest.
