[2016-02-07] Coldplay headlining Super Bowl 2016 - Confirmed

You know what, all this Beyonce and BM hype and arrogance is annoying me a little bit.

If you like those two, you should better not read the rest of this post. It may be a harsh opinion, but it is my opinion.

For me, acts like these represent the most shallow, commercial and stupid part of the current music business. As much as I don't like Coldplay's recent direction they are still far away from being that superficial and they are a lot more decent and humble than these self-styled pop kings and queens who either need scantily clad women dancing around them or can only sell their music by stripping off themselves in their music videos and stage performances. In other words, Coldplay are miles better and more sophisticated than these acts, even in their most ape-incarnating moments. Apparently too sophisticated, and too sincere and earnest for all those people complaining that it's not gonna be a real half-time show because they are "lame" and who really believe only the likes of Bey or BM can save it. I don't know how it's in other countries, but most of America seems to think that way and its plain annoying.

I've been considering exceptionally wearing a Coldplay button on SuperBowl Sunday... for since yesterday I am the proud owner of my very first Coldplay button, thanks to @iamsue !!! (but that's another story and I will soon post it in the Santa thread) :)

I completely agree with you. That's why I follow Coldplay. They don't have to scream we're the best and show off their talent to be successful. They're humble on everything they do. They're fame it's thanks to their songs. I'm still hoping she won't do it because my excitement has decreased. That's the worst decision they have made.

Their music isn't my style and their style isn't my style either, but they're both seriously talented. Their super bowl sets showcased it.

so according to the source inside the stadium, the final dress rehearsal was today and this time, beyonce's rehearsal was with sound.

and she is premiering a new song (unfortunately).

Oh wow man...just wow. So someone please ask Chris what was all that non sense about not singing "Hymn" because it just "came out and it would not be right" or something? I'm speechless at the non sense of this situation.

Congrats with your button!! Look forward to seeing it :)

I don't personally like Beyoncé or Bruno Mars music, I can't hear much melody, just a strange noise lol that said I recognize they are both great vocalists and can surely put up a great show as I saw from their previous halftime performances! So no wonder they are thrilling to watch for people who like their music. Kudos to them for that.

However I can't but agree with you about their "showing off" bravado which is at best unnecessary, at worst quite silly and embarrassing imo. With people like Justin I'd excuse it cuz he's a young lad, but these two are grown adults, they should know better than thinking and acting like they are some kind of royalty. Sadly this confirms to me that fame remains a hard thing to handle for

many without losing your head...

I'm trying to keep an open mind but it's hard not to see Beyoncé decision as shamelessly commercial and utterly disrespectful towards Coldplay. If she wanted to sing a charts-actual song surely surely the obvious choice had to have been Hymn! And I'm very disappointed about Coldplay as well. In this one instance I wish they'd "man" up and claim their right to the focus being on their show!

Beyoncé premieres a new song. Coldplay sing mostly some old songs. Out of this sentence only, who would you guess is the SuperBowl main artist here?

My theory as to why "the other two" are in the halftime show is that Pepsi thought that Coldplay wouldn't attract as many viewers as previous halftime shows, and that they persuaded them with including special guests. Because if they're not doing Hymn for the Weekend, there's no reason for Beyoncé (or Bruno) to be there. Both artists already did their halftime shows, and they were great. Just let Coldplay do their thing on their own.

Officially the "other two" were chosen to celebrate the past (the LA youth orchestra the future) because this is a special 50th anniversary. Nothing to do with not attracting audience. Coldplay sell out stadiums, they can hold the attention of a few millions Americans for 10 minutes or so :p

It's unclear though who chose Beyoncé and Bruno Mars. It seems from the interviews that it was Coldplay themselves who chose what artists from the past to extend an invitation to. Not sure though.

I am happy that they won't play hymn for the weekend. And i hope that thosr big chimpanzees won't show up!

Ok sorry it took me so long but it just dawned on me why the obvious choice of Hymn was discarded. The daft CA crowd of course who as we all know pretty much command and censor the discourse in the USA ( luckily not entirely in Europe yet and some places here not at all! )

Thank you PC crowd for once again ruining a thing I love and depriving me of what would have been a very exciting performance.

My only consolation is that comments for the great part don't buy into this bullshit. People don't seem to drink the kool aid as much as they once did.

Coldplay and Beyoncé: skip the cultural appropriation for SuperBowl halftime

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/feb/01/super-bowl-halftime-show-coldplay-beyonce-cultural-appropriation-india-bollywood

I'm quite sure the last song on the recording is Adventure of a Lifetime ... according to the rhythm Will is playing the drums :) And also the AHFOD-Kaleidoscope-effects on the stage floor! :)

The more I think about it... the more I'm absolutely sure this whole album ..songs ..date released.. artwork.. American inspired music.. choosing of the feat. artists, etc.. is all about the half-time show of the Super Bowl.

And if you doubt this... think about this for a second. What are the odds that Coldplay would be releasing an album at this particular time.. .and just a week after a single/music video is released with a former Super-Bowl half-time artist, Beyonce, who happens to be a featured artist and starring in the video.. then be performing for the historic 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl the very next week? Even AOAL ...that sounded like Bruno Mars to me.. oh look.. Bruno Mars is just confirmed for the half-time show. Like these artists weren't chosen long ago?

I think this is good and bad news.. yes, the album sounds like a sell-out for a reason. But at least I think the band's new 'direction' maybe be contrived ...to make them a hit ...get them mass-appeal .. at this show. They could potentially get a lot of new fans.. reach new fame levels.. blah blah. Then they'll be back to the Coldplay we know and love ..again. *crosses fingers*

The link isn't working I'm affraid. I've also tried without the "[/" on the end.

But nevermind, I think I have to stop reading and viewing videos because the more I see, the bigger the disappointment is getting.

And Coldplay is even allowing Beyoncé and Bruno Mars taking all the shine away.

I sure hope they will nail the part they are doing and prove to the disbelievers that they deserve to be on that stage.

*don't lose your trust*

I'm quite sure the last song on the recording is Adventure of a Lifetime ... according to the rhythm Will is playing the drums :) And also the AHFOD-Kaleidoscope-effects on the stage floor! :)

And also Chris's clapping at the begining of the song...

That's a quick transition, at least four songs in four minutes. Something - Viva - Something - AOAL

I'm really hoping Coldplay opens, throws to Bey and Bruno, then comes back to close it out.

The 2nd something is A Sky Full of Stars I think, and I'm pretty sure the video begins with Viva la Vida according to the drums. :)

I'm just going to wait until I watch the show. Don't want to jump into any kind of conclusions.

I was good with Beyoncé and even Bruno taking part until I heard Hymn won't be played and she will debut a new song. After these two events it's just become too pathetic and senseless for me to care much. I still hope the show will be good all in all.

Link should be working now. I'm reposting it also here.

That's probably always the wisest decision but the indications we have so far are far from promising :-/

Another short report about the Super Bowl and the Halftime Show on today's news. They talked about Beyoncé and Bruno Mars. Nothing about Coldplay. Though they did mention that a British band is going to perform at the show. I think they're called Cold Play.

Coldplay only has 9.5 minutes.... Not 30

I know... I'm not saying that they will be playing them as a whole. They'll be mashups, medleys, etc. I'm not stupid! :)

I agree completely, I was even kinda excited for HFTW but now...

yeah also the clapping thing .. the first song i think is ASFOS

Im guessing Adventure, Clocks/Fix You, Viva, Paradise, Up&Up (perhaps ASFOS). In what order I don't know
