There's still going to be people who don't like it make no mistake. That's the case for everything, but you can't deny the quality of their new stuff. However it might just not be the right kind of quality for people. But like yourself Juanma, I found their new stuff (bar ETIAW - which I'm really starting to wonder what possessed Coldplay to release it as a single) absolutely brilliant!

I'm not nearly as impressed as I was with previous albums, specifically LP2 and LP3, and when did I say I hate Coldplay? Dislike them? Yes.

The fact that the concert was good was also due to the fact that they play good live, unlike many bands, which have good album songs and they suck live. I will never deny Coldplay are great live, and what always attracts me about them live is their set of lights. I don't really feel any excitement about the new songs, except maybe for the walking man one cos it's kinda catchy, but other than that I'll stick to what Corkus said, that one song they played (Up against the world?) is what they should be writing, cos they're pretty good at that.

 

I guess I don't let my "hate" blind me like your love for them blinds you.

You have to admit it was a little silly, no one said they 'hated Coldplay', there was just a lot of dislike for ETIAW.

 

And the 'new era' just started yesterday, and the only audio we have of the songs is an online stream of a live festival show, so that's not the best way to judge things.

 

That's not to say I didn't enjoy the new songs or the show though. The lights were really sweet, I'm glad Life is for Living made a comeback, and Charlie Brown sounds like a pretty good song.

A lot of my major worries about LP5 have been erased by that gig. Like I say, sure I'd love more simple, less "wall of sound" stuff, and less flashy stagesets, but DANG I JUST REALLY LIKE EVERYTHING I'VE HEARD SO FAR. I'm just going purely on music as much as I can for this era and screwing the rest, because in the end, that's what it should be about to me. I have to try to separate history and promo and genre and sentimentality, and I think it's working for me so far.

 

I'm definitely put back in "major Coldplay fan" mode after watching Rock am Ring, and I can't wait to see and hear these songs myself at Oxegen.

ETIAW still sucks and the other songs were a mix of good and mediocre. And we still have probably half the album we still haven't heard.

 

I want to hear a better quality version of "Princess of China" before I judge that one (since it didn't get played tonight), but as for the 5 new songs tonight, I'm split into 2 good, 2 average, and 1 bad.

and with this performance they proved that all the worries were probably unnecesary .

we haven't heard the full thing yet. I hope the rest of the album won't be like ETIAW really.

Well I've listened to Hurts Like Heaven (terrible name) and I have to say I like it. I liked it a lot. Very 80s rock pop but at the same time it's something I could even imagine Arcade Fire doing but seeing as The Suburbs wasn't looked too favourably by some on here, for some reason, that's not a good thing either. I think some of you always expect melacholic piano led slow burners so have a very narrow view of what Coldplay should and shouldn't be doing which is a shame really. You may not like the Coldplay of the past few years and that is absolutely fine and understandable but there are others who think there new work is fantastic. But still we have to wait for the new album to see whether it holds much weight.

I actually agree; I think it's kind of dumb to say that Coldplay should have to be confined to one style of music. Some might not like their newer style, but for the people who do like that style of music, it sounds very good. And honestly it just gets annoying to see the constant comments about how they should go back to their old sound. I guess some people might want it, but I don't really want to hear the exact same type of thing 5 albums in a row.

That song Us Against the World is more towards the sound I want to hear. Just stripped down and not trying to be blown out of proportion. But I do like the song

 

The only thing is that knowing how the band is, I find the title of the song extremely pretentious and full of themselves.

I loved Us Against The World too; probably my favorite of the new ones I've heard.

That was a fantastic show. ETIAW wasn't as bad at the end of a great set but still the new songs were fantastic especially Major Minus.

I agree; I was impressed 9as usual) by their live performances.

All the songs are better than ETIAW in my opinion. I like Us Against The World (sounds like a Parachutes song) and Charlie Brown (pop song)

Yeah they're good, one that stood out for me would be Charlie Brown but this is my opinion and of course others will be sceptical about the new tracks. The duet between Will and Chris is lovely too :)
