New Coldplay eh?

Featured Replies

I'm not going to listen to the new songs. I'll listen to the album when it comes out but I'm not going to judge the songs on early (?) live versions.

I iz confused. Mainly because I'm finding it impossible to compare these new songs with previous works in any shape or form. Even us against the world is totally alien compared to all their old acoustic stuff. On one hand this is exactly what I (and Eno) were hoping for, in that it feels like I'm watching a completely different band.

In each of the previous albums I had a clear compass of what they were trying to do with their music, now I have absolutely no idea how to approach Hurt Like Heaven or Us Against The World. The single has me assuming that it's so odd because they've sold out as Mike described, and thus are only going for a certain brand of cheap, uninspired pop-rock. But the better aspects of the newer tracks offer a glimmer of hope that theyre not complete idiots, and that I might have to wait for the album to make complete sense of it.

I mean, I'm still anticipating a massive disappointment and the worst CP album to date, but I'm definitely confused how some of these songs relate to each other in the context of an album.

i had that problem with VLV. too many ideas thrown into one album. their first 3 albums at least had a general sound or feeling going throughout the whole album. but like i said yesterday, coldplay is no longer being pitted against your Arcade Fire's and Elbow's of the world. who focus on making "album" albums. their competition comes from the chart topping pop acts who focus on having big singles to keep their fans happy.

^^I get what you mean..When I heard Teardrops I was very sure that the whole album would be such a massive poppish rainbow-ish failed dance album. However then comes in other songs like Us Against the World and I'm completely puzzled. How can they release a song like ETIAW as a single for an album that contains songs like UATW? It is as if the band is saying.."hey let's just release this really crappy song and have the whole fanbase go crazy about how bad it is and then go out and surprise them by performing the other new songs that are more stripped down which is what many fans wanted".

There's no correlation at all between their first released single and few other new songs they've recently played.

I think that kind of hits the nail on the head as to why VLV will never be up to par with the first two for me, as much as I love it: it's moving in too many directions at once for me. That's fine for some people, but I feel like Parachutes, AROBTTH, and even X&Y all have this common theme/sound/vibe that all the tracks contribute towards, and that's something I love in albums across the board. VLV is great in its own right to me, but it's...kind of ADD and scattered. I feel like every track offers something different, which is a kind of cool thing in itself, but I think for me it ultimately feels like a collection of songs rather than an album, whereas the previous three were very solidly RECORDS to me, even if X&Y could have benefitted from being shorter and less samey.

I will say that this single is the one of the best things thats happened to this forum. everyone seems to be posting twice as often.

I agree, despite all the immature spats and drama at both ends of the spectrum, it's fun to be back :wacky:. I took a pretty long hiatus for at least a year, and recently have really only been posting in The Strokes' thread, because they're my other big music loves and they've been more relevant lately.

But Coldplaying is kind of a place I think I'm always going to return to :nice:. I like having constructive (key word: constructive) conversations about music, and regardless of the band, I think Coldplaying is a great place to do it.

Constructive or not, I must admit that I'm enjoying the chaos. It's been a while :P

so good to see WoM coming to back life!!

i wanna see coldplay do a collab with my new favourite band.

Haha, he can't take any criticism of his 4 favorite bands, but ironically he can bash Radiohead in his favourite bands threads so lol, I need to make a balance mate.

Oh dear! :D I've done my fair amount of criticism of my favourite bands (strangely I don't know who my 4 favourite bands are but you do) If you want me to say kind things about Radiohead then I'll say it. It's just you going on the attack and getting all defensive....makes you look like a Radiohead fangirl. Though that was a great digression into the subject after I said I don't really feel there is a greatest band in the world.

Now where were we? Oh yeah! Coldplay's new songs!

I haven't listened to all the new songs yet, but downloading the live stream video as I type! :D

I think I'll just wait for the album for those new songs...

Lots of us are saying that we like some of the songs, of course we're giving them credit. It's not like we'll hate everything they do, some of us are still big coldplay fans, it just happens that we actually have opinions and don't accept blindly everything that coldplay does.

Major Minus - can't stand this. the different parts of the song just don't seem to fit together in a coherent manner

It's funny how you can't stand it whereas to me it seems like the best out of all new songs  I can't say exactly why I like it, I just do.

This thread is about Coldplay, not Radiohead dammit.

Radiohead is the gravity of this forum.

Oh that Radiohead!

i just heard these and realized there is still hope

i love these songs but the waterfall song sonnds like an ad for water

Waterfall just doesn't fit anywhere. When the song even sounds so out of place in a great setlist like last night's you know you've got problems. I can't see the crowd taking to it and I can see it being dropped from their setlists quite quickly.

If you want anything remotely resembling the first two album's they need to get Ken Nelson back.........but it would appear during X & Y bridges were burnt :(

The whole story of how ETIAW came about is very worrying. Chris has been hanging out with Jay-Z too much.

Most bands don't make it to 5 albums. After hearing some of the new songs - in time this new album could be remembered as Coldplay's weakest......it just sounds like a band who are playing it safe. The same happened to U2. The complete opposite happened to Radiohead.

But these are only live versions of half a album at best so fingers crossed.

The chorus of "Hurts Like Heaven" is shockingly bad.

you do realise U2's 5th album was called The Joshua Tree.

Yes. But in recent years they have played it very safe because they want to stay as commerical as possible as sadly they are a brand. Whilst Radiohead are content doing whatever they want and so be it.

It would appear Coldplay want to stay at the top now - judging by the new stuff. They need a kick up the backside and some pressure especially Chris, who appears to be stuck in a rut, so far.

Some people said ETIAW would be a grower for fans of Coldplay's older material. I would laugh at them, but instead I'm going to give them "Major Minus" as an example, because that's how a grower should be. First listen during the webcast yesterday, I passed it off as an average song, even calling it "an inferior CoL". But every listen has improved for me. ETIAW isn't like that. In fact, that one has just gotten worse.

So I'm liking MM more and more now. That said, I still just can't understand what you guys see in "Hurts Like Heaven". It's a generic pop song. Yeah, "Charlie Brown" is pop too, but you know what? It's catchy as hell. HLH doesn't do a thing for me.

yeah but U2 made 6 amazing albums before they started playing it safe (well they were weaker albums rather than safe) coldplay have gone down that path after just a few.

radiohead are in a league of their own.

Yeh I agree U2 peaked in 1991.

I only really liked the last 4 tracks of KOL. The rest seemed like a Thom Yorke solo album.

But to be fair to Coldplay they made it pretty big after the 2nd album around 2003 - much earlier than U2. Viva is my favourite album and my least favourite is X & Y - saying that I do pine for the early stuff as I have been a fan since 2000.

Playing it safe? Arguably so but it's still good music they are producing and the 4 of them looked like they were having the time of their lives on stage last night along with the fans. No one can fault that. What's better than seeing 4 guys loving what they do on stage along with thousands of delighted fans?

edit: And I think if Coldplay included Everything's Not Lost in their setlist it would go really really well. It would make the best closer.
