People who say Chris has lost it, forget that he has just signed up to curate Global Citizen for 15 years! If that is not commitment to a cause and caring / concern for the world at large, I don't know what is... I'm sure if he didn't care he could go do other stuff. I'm sure he asked the rest of the band about it as well, and they would have objected if they were not prepared to commit to potentially performing for this cause once a year for the next 15 years. The disillusioned people also seem to have forgotten the purpose of Chris' original trip to India by himself.

The 'dumbing down' of lyrics may have a combination of reasonable explanations:

- Many fans from developing countries may not have great English - the message may get lost if it's too intricate / subtle. The band look like they are focusing more on less developed countries this time round, in keeping with the Global Goals. Many themes and lyrics on this album seem directed to people from these places as well - "half the sky", referencing Umi, "for the people, who got no one voice", "down upon the canvas, working meal to meal / lying in the gutter, aiming for the moon" (these ones' more universal)...

- Some lyrics fit their current genre / interests (eg the notorious XMTS heart lyric and "drunk and high" on HFTW), but if one looks at the rest of the song lyrics, they can still be meaningful

- As some have noticed, he is also referencing a lot of previous songs and eras... they're sort of non-sensical, but all convey the sense of where this album is taking the listener and where the band are emotionally, some develop previous ideas. Examples are Birds / Speed of Sound as previously mentioned, light streaming through broken open window (AHFOD vs UFO), Amsterdam's gloomy "my star is fading" --> out of control vs HFTW's exuberant "shoot across the sky" (same star presumably, now together with another), magic as a metaphor (in Magic vs AOAL), Fun referencing the sun and waves (Ladder To the Sun, Crest of Waves), heart as a gun (Army of One vs HLH and AROBTTH)

This is proof that people are focusing on the two whole bad lyrics rather than the good ones.

This is proof that there still is very great lyrics in the album. We just need to blot out the negatives.

Second bold: I LOVE how they do that. I love that AHFOD lyric, reminds me of that wonderful U.F.O song! I also like how they didn't forget about the magical Ladder To The Sun yet. That's the 4th best song of the X&Y era IMO... HOW DID IT NEVER GET RELEASED??? I tell you, Coldplay makes me some mad sometimes... lol

I can say that I was not a big fan of this song off the bat. But as Coldplay are so brilliant, the song is infectious and grew on me. Jonny's guitar effects remind me of birds and has that ethereal quality coupled with Will and Guy's driving bass/drum rhythm - this song is great.

Chris's vocal is interesting to boot, and the build to the end is so good, I wish it never stopped, but the abrupt end is unique for sure. Can't wait to hear this live.

^ no that's Will

B: Do you have individually a favourite track on the new album?

W: My favourite track at the moment, which I’m looking forward to people hearing more of is called ‘Army of One’. I think it’s great.

G: Birds, I like Birds.

Actually, Guy said "Bewds. I like Bewds"

Actually, no accounting for anyone's tastes.. Will's favourite MX song was UIF afterall.

Anyway, birds is one of the best songs coldplay have written for me. Can listen to it over and over again! I'll even forgive the last line.

Haha You're right! The accent times. Ah. I must've gotten their voices confused in the moment. :( I thought I knew the sounds of their voices well enough by now. Not like they ever get to sing on any of the songs. :| They'll try everything, even horrible things, but God-forbid another Death Will Never Conquer...

Up in Flames is a great song. But it's definitely not the best on MX. It's Ghost Stories but with more talent and emotion imo.

True. I do wish I could hear the violin better at the end and more clarity for Jonny's riffs on the chorus though. They sound a little distorted to me.

True. I do wish the instruments were a little louder and I could hear Jonny's riffs clearer on the chorus though.

I get the emotion on UIF, but its just dull to me. There a beautiful melody in there but too dull and repetitive.

Anyway, birds is definitely one of the better produced songs in there I think. But yeah, wish instruments were clearer and more "organic".

I think the absolute best part in UIF is Jonny´s riff. Its perhaps his best on all Mylo Xyloto. :)

And yes Birds...an absolute classic! Its probably the most thrilling song on AHFOD for me in the sense that it gives me the biggest "butterfly in the stomach soaring through the sky" feeling! hehe Close seconds are Hymn and Adventure.

What about the solo(s) in HLH? (as a whole)

Funny you should mention that. I actually listened to whole MX today and that solo in HLH I was like wow thats just so amazing and cool (especially the downward scale solo around 1:02!) hehe Its a great one too indeed! I mentioned UIF because first of all his solo lifts the whole song from mediocre to suddenly great. And also the melody in that solo is a real curved ball...its only a few notes but I find it the most sophisticated on MX.

I think he brought that sophistication to AHFOD in full scale, to my great delight hehe :)

speaking of MX what do you guys thank about DLIBYH ? i think it's the most underrated song ever

Love it. Its so thumping ! I remember when they played it live in Paris, it was awesome! and Im glad it made it onto the concert blu-ray as one of the extra tracks.

OT, but an absolute masterpiece! That, and ETIAW... Just mindblowing riff after riff after riff! It's almost criminal how many he put in there lol... He is such a genius.

(especially the downward scale solo around 1:02!)

That is such a beautiful rippling, shimmering guitar - one of his signature riffs... So much air and space in there - it just floats... Those Jonny riffs are really what CM is referring to when he says "so high" and "I must be miles up" :P

This song just keeps getting better and the better the more I hear it...

And this line "holding on in the mystery" is just so good, so good :) To me it so aptly depicts two people holding on together in the mystery that is life, a mystery that both means unknown but also excitement and surprises, so it also means "even if life is full of unknowns and surprises, we´ll hold on together through it all". I feel so much in a few words every time he sings this :)

I don't honestly understand the criticism about the lyrics in AHFOD. Im just seeing something totally different I guess. Im finding more favorite lyric lines in this album than any previous ones, even Viva and Mylo!
