So what I am saying is that we should wait before making up our minds. Everyone here is free to give their views, but it hurts to see long-time fans destroying such a wonderful band before they see the release of the final product. On the other hand, I don't see that they are wearing make up. And it is normal that they have colorful jackets and pants. To me, their main thing is their music - the other things are extra stuff to make it a little bit less serious and more fun. damn, im excited just thinking of swallowed in the sea. i have purposely not listened to coldplay for a few months cause I knew once they came out with new material I would be hooked and their songs would be on repeat.

Reading lyrics without knowing the music is like reading a dialogue without any punctuation or information about how the text is being pronounced. You get the sense, but not the emotions. Swallowed in the Sea is a good example of that, yes. The way Chris sings "What good is it to live with nothing left to give, forget but not forgive, not loving all you see" changes everything in your perception of these lyrics.

May 31, 201115 yr Back when there was this hype about 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall' is probably going to e one of the titles of the songs in LP5, I thought that the next album would be very, very bad. But then I told myself that might just be a joke. So I was hopeful. Then the few new videos without sound came out recently and I was very intrigued. Videos with words but no music? Of course I was very curious. And I told myself that this may turn out to be good. But now, not only that that awful title is becoming their first single release, the lyrics sounded like what Avril Lavigne would sing. And I agree with Mike with those photos.. What's with the jackets and the graffiti and the fancy hairdo(for Chris)? I'm not sure if they are trying too hard to 'fit in'as Mike has assumed, but it seems to me like they are trying too hard to prove that they are coming up with something different this time around, when the fact is that having this image is as cliche as their decision of having their viva image the first time.
May 31, 201115 yr I really don't think the lyrics are bad. "Wa wa wa waterfall" is getting to me but until I hear it I can't judge. But overall they are different but when I look at these lyrics up against something like Clocks for example I see no difference in abstract. Only I can figure out what the theme of this song is. They may be hit and miss some of them but I feel most of the lyrics are a hit. In fact I think some of them are fantastic. And the costumes? Really what is wrong with wanting to be a bit distinctive? They clearly want to set themes for this album. It's their job to keep things interesting and besides we've seen Coldplay 'be themselves' for the first three albums. Time to move on and keep things interesting. They are big enough and successful enough to do something like this and good on them for doing so. They're doing it differently but they are rightly continuing with what was so so successful for them for their last album which was easily along with AROBTTH their best in quality terms. I disagree. The lyrics themselves on their own are very sloppy. And his rhyming is extremely predictable. It's like I just imagine like the line that ends in "knees" he's thinking... hmm... what can I rhyme with that... oh I know... trapeeze. I just feel the excessive rhyming becomes too predictable. I mean even when I first heard Swallowed in the Sea I could figure out what word he was going to say before he even said it. And the whole dressing up thing is ridiculous because it feels like they're trying to hard IMO to be something different. At least their first 2 albums they just acted normal. as long as certain people remain here I don't think the Ruby thing will go away, sorry What's the whole Ruby thing? ...goodbye Ruby Tuesday
May 31, 201115 yr This whole thing makes me remember the days before Viva La Vida, I have great memories from those days because it was the first time since I was a coldplay fan that they were realeasing an album. Unfortunately, i've become a fan of them just a few weeks after the release of X&Y. I knew some songs of them, like Clocks, In My Place, Speed Of Sound (new song at that moment) but I didn't know from what band those songs were (I was 11 years old at that time), until I saw them playing at the Live 8 and totally fell in love with them. I'm enjoying every day of this a lot, because it's not just a simple song we're talking about, true fans know what I mean. LP5 is approaching and with that comes a new era with lots of new songs, gigs, news, memories and anecdotes. This are the moments when I think: god i'm really glad i'm a Coldplay fan :D

Of course I have to hear the song before I judge, but lately the band has not been impressing me, from their image and trying to hard to be something they are not to their change in sound to appeal to a specific audience to most importantly Chris Martins sloppy lyric writing. If he really has trouble with lyrics then make it a collaborative effort, but I find them embarrassing. And it's not as if it's just one song but a lot of his songs. I guess that if you've been disappointed by the boys before, it is probable that it will happen again. For my part, I really like all their songs. Some more than others, but I really like the music they make. I understand that you don't like their new costumes, the fact that they are all colorful now, but they have been like that since the release of VIVA, so its no news around here. We are not even sure that the lyrics are just from Chris - maybe Will, Guy and Jonny were also involved. What specific audience do you think they are trying to seduce?

May 31, 201115 yr Some of the lyrics are really odd-sounding, like they don't make sense grammatically. Not something that's going to change once the music is added. But as for the lines that just sound super cheesy, they could sound better with the music. I liked that people used Swallowed In The Sea as an example; I actually think that the entirety of X & Y is much better musically than lyrically. I think this song may be like this, or at least I hope so, because if the music doesn't impress me there's no way I'll end up liking this song since the lyrics have already failed to impress. However, I do like the line "I'd rather be a comma than a full stop". Also, why are people even discussing the photos and the new outfits? It says nothing about the music at all. And it isn't as if the band directs their own photoshoots.

May 31, 201115 yr I already have problems with this song and I haven't even heard it. The lyrics... holy crap the lyrics are horrendous. I mean honestly does Chris Martin just take like 5 minutes to write all the lyrics to a song? It should be an in depth process. Also I think they look a bit ridiculous in the new photos as well... why do you need to dress up and/or wear make up... just be yourself. It's like they're trying too hard to fit in. Their first two albums they never needed to put up any kind of image. I really hope I like their new album and songs after being disappointed looking back with their last two albums (Though I loved X&Y initially). So far they aren't doing a good job in convincing me. I don't think that "Fix You" or as others indicate "Swallowed in the Sea" had very complicated and depthy(!) lyrics but we see how great they are,,, about photos I think you are right to some extent but we must consider the fact that coldplay does not tend to and is not a regular and every-day band, I don't mean it's good or bad but by each Album I think they share a wide area of feelings and impressions, they want to be really great and impressing, so to have a good harmony with the new era, they have to have a new WAY of wearing... but opposite to others I think a complete opinion will be available only after the album released not only after this song... We have great "Christmas Lights" and that's why they can ;) sorry for poor english

What I want is that on Friday we can hear music that fits perfectly those lyrics and hence the lyrics become also perfect. But I am aware of the fact that you have very good songs (musically) with creepy lyrics. If that's the case, then I will wait until hearing all the other songs of LP5, since as it is obvious you cannot absolutely LOVE all the songs on an album.

Listening back to X&Y it's very mediocre, not much that stands out anymore. Also X&Y there's bits I really like (beginning bits of 42 & Death, and also some songs like Life in Technicolor & Reign of Love). For an audience I think it's more of a teenage/tween age gap that they are trying to reach being that that is an age where people change their looks and wear ridiculous clothings at that age. So I think it's going for that.
