LP7- "A Head Full Of Dreams"

It's important to note there's been a fundamental issue with Coldplay. Along with Madonna, Bon Jovi and Nickelback they're currently the most irrelevant musicians in the industry. I don't have to tell you what they all have in common! Since VLVODAAHF their presence or lack of it is totally insignificant, with their influence and resonance and ability to impact or change things in music now totally minuscule.

Of course people's argument here is that they're just a careless happy band now, trying to make happy songs to make everyone else happy about being happy, until everyone vomits a sugary goo of Disney rainbows. But life and music don't work like that, and this forum and the views shared on it do not represent the millions of passionate music lovers and listeners out there.

I personally think there are more unsettling undertones in what they're trying to achieve. They've been a major force in the rise of bands like Imagine Dragons, 5 Seconds of Summer and One Direction, all the while exerting the idea of feeding blandness and mediocrity to the unchallenged masses.

haha sugary goo of disney rainbows!

I wouldnt say since VLV, but since MX. VLV was a very refreshing album. I remember being overwelmed by the title track and just by the whole album, the diversity and great production/instrumentation. Its also an album where they reinvented themselves after the not so original x&y (<- which I love btw, that's when i started listening), which made them stay relevant, I think.

Overall they were respected a lot more and it was just still a very interesting band. Already for the masses but one of the big bands with such excitement around them.

Sigh.. How I wish they were still that band..

And now their steady fanbase is shrinking. The music is not really anything to be really passioned about. So fans are not really going over and over talking about it. The concerts will be huge, but most people there are going because they are the biggest band in the world, they just want to be entertained with a sky full of stars, adventure, vlv, paradise. Just the hits they bought on itunes. These people will not become passioned fans looking for all their music, b-sides, bonus tracks, ep's, live performances, past etc.

Its too bad they dont seem to care about this.

Why don't they want to challenge themselves anymore. They are still quite young. How can they feel challenged writing songs with 'oh you and me we were always meant to always meant to beeeeee'.

What exactly happened after this?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=ru8iY_sIHf0;m=1;s=30

I really feel we've lost the guys, sort of :(

Just because we're losing, doesn't mean we're lost. ;)

(technically not a great time to use it)

Lol your post made me really sad! And I kind of think it half and half started with Viva, this sense of "We have to make this a spectacle!" But on the other hand, most of the album did reflect their "better not bigger" mentality. And you're so right about their lyrics. We've gone from profound songs like Clocks and its "confusion never stops, closing walls and ticking clocks" and my personal favorite, Square One's "the future's for discovering, the space in which we're traveling" to "late night watching tv. your body on my body." And "boom boom chicka boom" (or whatever it is) and I'm afraid to say you're right about the people at the concerts. I bet if you ask most of them what song Amsterdam or Life is for Living off of, they wouldn't have a clue.

And that's not to say there aren't some songs I enjoy. There's several off of each that I really enjoy and feel that same old Coldplay feeling. But even those aren't enough to take over my radio or headphones day in and day out. I used to defend Coldplay's music to the death. I would get in so many arguments about how great Coldplay was and the idea of not liking even one of their songs was un fathomable.

Hopefully theyre long break will get them refreshed :) Everything's Not Lost!

BTW Coldplay can still write good lyrics IMO, it's just that there's those times where they dont:( Like those two examples or "my heart go ba boom ba boom" or whatever it was again.

Oh I'm sorry! Didn't want to make you sad.

But yes, it is quite sad. It seems that classic Coldplay will be pushed to the background, the more big pop tunes they come up with.

Their older musics lyrics could also be interpreted in different ways. Now it's just so straight to the point, simple, not much to discover. Just as with the music, the instrumentation, the songs structure and production, songs like Fun and army of one could be by any pop band/artist. These songs bring me back to when I was listening to many pop groups as a teenager. It's so strange putting the song a rush of blood to the head next to one of those 2 songs. But yes, of course there are exceptions. And then there are the good songs that are just kind of murdered by the production.

I made one album from all their 'exceptions' in itunes from their last 3 albums, which I really enjoy.

I also dont really mind a few guily pleasure songs, I enjoy every teardrop is a waterfall. A band should be allowed to have some fun, absolutely, but this last album clearly says to me they want to keep on having fun.

But then in between they come up with midnight and ghost story and atlas too, songs that pull me back. Songs that let me still believe they someday will make something better.

I remember in eras past where Anchorman reported every once in a while with a behind the scenes post about the where the band where in the process, announcing the tour almost right along with the album's release and Roadie 42 showing us some cool pictures and articles from the band in intimate moments. Now, it's just *nothing nothing nothing*"here's an album"*nothing nothing nothing* not even any singles or eps. This also goes into my feeling that band are just burnt out and need a long, long break

So come over, just be patient and don't worry..

They're taking a break after this so they might get better soon.

Exactly, early Coldplay were one of a kind. Now they are just one among many.

Can I call you Negative Nancy? Has a good ring to it.

Can I call you Negative Nancy? Has a good ring to it.

Sure, by all means do call me that. Indeed this word combination does sound good, in fact, it sounds better than most songs the band called Coldplay have put out since 2009.

Okay Nancy, so answer this please. You yourself have said that you enjoy the songs Ghost Story, Atlas and Moving To Mars. Those songs are post 2009. What say thou? :P

Let the games begin:D

Nooooo don't! :D

She (I CANT BELIEVE I ALMOST SAID HE AGAIN) also likes Princess of China.

But she said she doesn't like most of what came post 2009. Those are obvious exception.

We're not gonna foght again right? Just checking haha.

First off, my name is not Nancy, but since you wanna call me that, let me call you Positive Polly then !

Second, so Polly, you must have mixed me up with someone because Atlas and MTM are not among my liked songs (but many Oldplayers do like them, so I think you got me mixed up with someone else). But yeah, I love Ghost Story and to a certain extent I like Paradise, Princess Of China and Fun. But @cp3176 got it right - I said most. No contradiction there.

And may the odds be ever in your favor :P

Wait, I thought that was a Dark Knight Rises reference :P

Alright, let's stop getting salty here

Indeed, there is no reason to be too somber my comrades.

Yes, I think it is fair to say Coldplay peaked with Viva and declined ever since in terms of artistry. But we can all at least admit their last 3 albums have been pretty stinking good even if they aren't masterpieces. AHFOD has issues, and it doesn't feel as passionately made or well crafted, but it has flashes of brilliance.

But Coldplay does need to take a look at themselves now and decide what kind of band they want to be. With their modern era music they have pandered a bit too much to different pop flavors to remain relevant. And look, I legitimately believe they had fun and put loads of work into AHFOD and that they all really enjoy the pop sounds they were pursuing. Unfortunately the music feels stale; like sub-par pop music married to sub-par alternative rock. They need to return to making music that is more organic and takes longer to simmer.

They need to commit to simpler ideas and FOCUS ON THE SONGWRITING NOT PRODUCTION. Coldplay's best music is stripped, simple, and beautiful. I really hope they just return to the studio and make something acoustic with little extra production. They have dabbled in every kind of music now. They should return to their roots.
