Hymn for the Weekend

Featured Replies

Only listened to it once... but in between "Birds" and "Everglow", on that first listen it was pretty "meh". Though I often have to listen to songs several times before coming to a definite judgement.

Yeah it is kind of a disappointing follow-up to those two incredible songs

OMG, I used to think half of the overlaid female voices and especially the "lalalala tadaaa tadaaahaaa" part is Blue Ivy (cause it doesn't sound like Beyonce too much as I know her). I thought Blue Ivy was the age of Apple or something. And now I read she is a toddler !!! Means all those parts are sung by Beyonce. And where does Blue e come in now ?

It could be heavily autotuned haha

What a masterpiece

Love this song already gonna be a huge radio hit

Come on.A masterpiece? No offense, but are you serious? This is seriously one of Coldplay's worst songs ever. And they seem so proud of this track to, and I'm like "But why?" It's boring and generic.

And say what you like but when I'm listening to a soft rock, rock, alternative band/artist whatever I don't want to listen to r&b, country or pop songs and vice versa.

This song is so much catchier than I expected. Definitely better than I thought, no matter how drunk and high this song is it actually isn't bad at all and I would be quite hurt if it doesn't blow up on the charts

i hate this song, but now i'm drunked and so high so high... :retard:

the chorus of this song, is growing in me... but i don't like the song... i don't know wtf is happening to me XDDDD

i bet the same, in church chris got out the tune a lot of times...

as soon as i heard the clip they posted on Facebook, i knew i was going to 100% love this song and guess what? i was right :P

I can't get this song out of my head but I'm 100% okay with it.

I don't know about this track.. It might be a grower

Hello, everyone! First, THIS IS MY FAVOURITE SONG FROM THE ALBUM. I know Everglow is lovely and it gives me the familiar feeling from the piano, but Hymn For The Weekend just clicks. I wasn't sure at the beginning since Beyoncé...but after a couple of times is inevitable the emotion it gives of. And the lyrics, again, hit me.

Still have to listen to the album a hundred times to appreciate each song, and probably the rest of the lyrics won't fit yet (I know they will eventually, it's Coldplay we're talking about), but so far Hymn For The Weekend got my heart :)

^^Mmmm..."Got me feeling drunk and high. So high, so high

I'm feeling drunk and high

So high, so high." Glad you liked the song but it's hard to find emotion in lyrics like those.

Hey opinions vary. I gotta say the lyrics may be pretty crap but the actual music is catchy af

The song is not good at all but it's catchy. I found myself actually singing the song in my head today at work which is weird because I hate this song.

it was stuck in my head after listening to it a couple of times played on bbc radio 1. the kind of song that annoyingly sticks with you :)

Try "put your wings on me when I was so heavy, soar on a symphony". :) I dont know, I love the lyrics to this song, maybe cause they mean so much to me personally especially the angel and "drink from me" reference. And the feeling drunk and high reference , I so know how that feels when you´re so filled with love your head is spinning and you´re "shooting across the sky" :)

I personally like how Chris is so immediate yet effective in how he describes things, but lyrics, like music, are so subjective. At the end of the day what moves you is what resonates with you.

^^^ lol sadly can't relate

But I listened to the Coldplay album when I got home (all the way through), then I listened to the Grease soundtrack, then Abbey Road and some other miscellaneous music and guess which song was stuck in my head by the end of it all........

*shakes fist* COLDPLAY!!!!

You might one day :D (relate I mean)

And yes our boys and their craft for creating memorable tunes :D Though to be fair Abbey Road was not the Beatles catchiest album haha (though one of my faves by them)

Well I can confirm being in love is like a drug. It makes you feel high indeed when you experience it, but at the same time it clouds your vision and ability to think, and then of course, withdrawal hurts just as badly ;)

Life on the other hand, if life were a drink, it would have to be something like lemon juice mixed with a little bit of sugar. Cause life is bittersweet.

you actually like it :p

I'm posting a full album review/initial thoughts soon, but for now... this song actually exceeds my expectations. It's still generic over polished R&B pop to my ears, but... I sense more of the band's heart and soul that I believe has been sorely lacking in POC and ASFOS. Beyonce doesn't ruin the track and, for a pop song, it's actually fairly listenable. I'd take it any day over most of the American Top 40 radio. Though it's still mind boggling that Chris had the guts to write lyrics about being drunk and high lol. ;)

Now, when I'm comparing HFTW to Coldplay's work as a whole, that's where the flaws are that prevent me from truly loving it. The whole idea of the song makes a bit more sense to me now that I've listened to it. I seriously had the lowest expectations I've ever had for a Coldplay song, and hated the snippet with a fiery passion, but this as a little better than expected. I give it 6.5/10, which is probably a very generous rating. For a song that I truly despise and will likely never learn to like, take a look at X Marks The Spot. Far worse than Hymn For The Weekend.

Interesting comment. As I cant possibly view these 3 songs even remotely objective (they mean so much to me for personal reasons), I´d be interested to hear why you think Hymn has more heart and soul? They all 3 seem pretty much on the same vein to me, musically and lyrically speaking.

People seem to be mentioning this, though I dont see why its seen as mind boggling? Its clearly a metaphor and nothing more. And when you are totally in love, there is hardly a better way to describe it than "drunk and high" LOL Its not really an intellectual intricate experience , its just overwhelming and it feels damn good haha :)

Hymn has more heart and soul for me for a few reasons. Even though I don't necessarily enjoy the direction the band decided to take, it just seems better executed. Princess of China is more of a Rihanna song to me and the production annoys me a bit. It has potential but only the live version really does it for me. As for ASFOS, Avicii kind of takes over and steers it in his own direction... which is fine I guess if the band wanted it to be a huge uplifting moment but it sticks out a bit in comparison to the rest of GS. In contrast, Hymn sounds more like Coldplay took the helm and, with Stargate's encouragement, tried to dive deep into a new sound.

I know, I was just kidding there lol. :D
