Hymn for the Weekend

Hymn has more heart and soul for me for a few reasons. Even though I don't necessarily enjoy the direction the band decided to take, it just seems better executed. Princess of China is more of a Rihanna song to me and the production annoys me a bit. It has potential but only the live version really does it for me. As for ASFOS, Avicii kind of takes over and steers it in his own direction... which is fine I guess if the band wanted it to be a huge uplifting moment but it sticks out a bit in comparison to the rest of GS. In contrast, Hymn sounds more like Coldplay took the helm and, with Stargate's encouragement, tried to dive deep into a new sound.

I know, I was just kidding there lol. :D

Ah you were kidding, sorry LOL One of my not so strong suits: I tend to take things too literally hehe :)

PoC is pure synths yeah pretty much, so I can see how some might feel it lacks "heart" (if you associate synths with cold feelings and organic sound with heartfelt ones). The lyrics tell a pretty poignant story though. Did you incidentally like the acoustic version of this? It brings out the core of the song beyond the lush production.

ASFOS I remember they said they worked very hard at trying to balance Avicii with Coldplay. If you remember the full Avicii edit thats Avicii having his way hehe while you can tell how the album version is still very Coldplay, though the live version of this scintillates more than the album version imo, so I agree with your impressions there.

I´d say you can pretty much see how they entered new territory with PoC, then delved deeper into it with ASFOS and now they have found a comfortable place in this genre with Hymn. Kinda makes sense they got more experience as they went along with something that for them is new :)

POC and ASFOS lyrically are also telling a story more about the song's narrator and one other person. like POC is about the other person in the relationship (when both Chris and Rihanna sing) and how they did wrong, basically. ASFOS is about praising another person and forgetting yourself. as a listener it's easy to feel like a third party hearing those two songs unless you put yourself in the place of the narrator.

I think Hymn is more like building on that and saying... drink from me... it's a much more inviting song. like, thinking back to what Chris said about wanting to write a song that was like someone at a bar buying drinks for everyone (drinks on me) it definitely has that feeling. it's more about sharing an experience and engaging with everyone around you. so you can feel like a part of the song without imagining yourself in Chris's place. when you bring yourself into the song, it's gonna feel to have more heart and soul to you.

I'm sorry but HFTW is just a bunch of words slapped together. It's being over analyzed way too much. The only profound lyric in it is "When I was hurt, withered, dried up

You came to rain a flood." And even that lyric is reminiscent of Us Against the World. Which, by the way, is an absolutely beautiful song.

Now of course lyrics are subjective, but this song is deeply meaningful to me and it was from the very start.

The lyrics were all very clear to me about having someone in your life who gives you life and strength and love when you are at your lowest. This is the angel in the song (angel from up above, put your wings on me), which to me also directly connects to the woman (women?) in Adventure of a Lifetime. The "drink from me" metaphor is truly beautiful and very apt to convey this feeling of how someone can truly breathe life into you again, give you sustainance in such a basic level. And of course its a song describing how such a connection to this person is rooted in a profound love (the "drunk and high" and "shoot across the sky" lyrics is how we all feel when we are in love hehe).

These lyrics actually move me a lot, because I have such a person in my life, whom I have always called "angel" and she has always been the one to lift me when I am "so heavy". :) So yeah thats why the song speaks to me so :)

Note: The "drinks on me" theme was what initially came to Chris but it was then scrapped (Guy saying you cant get away with that haha) and the angel-figure theme came along, which btw I think Beyonce sings beautifully with her angelic voice. :)

I've been in love before and still am with someone but I've never likened it to being drunk or high. That seems like a cheap metaphor, to be honest. But maybe I feel this way because I've never been/or want to be drunk or high. :) (Not saying you have or do, though). To me loving someone feels a lot more complicated than that. But as you say it's all subjective.

Being in love of all things is the most subjective of all! haha I, like Chris perhaps I think, have quite an exuberant "bubbly" nature, so I tend to feel things very strongly on both side of the spectrum (bad or good). I´ve been in love a few times, but with this one woman it does truly feel like being drunk and high and actually the soaring through the sky part I know very well (I do it often in my head hehe).

And no this is not like being physically drunk or high for me. I´v been both and I dont like the feeling, I just tried it once or twice and quickly got bored. The being high and drunk in love is much different, it feels really good and just right! And you know what? It doesn't even have to be about a specific person, sometimes its just the sheer joy of being alive, you feel it cursing in your blood like a drug :)

But yeah I agree, hardly everyone feels the same, love means and feels differently to all of us.

Edit: Oh And i noticed you wrote "loving someone" being more complicated. And yes it totally is! But "Being in love" is not the same feelings as "loving someone" to me. The former is the "rush" of love through you, the latter is how this love manifests in all and the dynamic you have with this person in all areas of your life and through time so yeah the latter would be much more complicated hehe

I really like this track. One of my favourites. I like how Beyonce isn't a big feature of the song, but rather complementing the song. Pretty neat how Chris has now recorded with both Jay-Z and Beyonce :)

Their child Blue Ivy is part of the choir in Up&Up!

author's intent can matter, but ultimately meaning is created by the consumer. so maybe HftW is not lyrically profound, but if some people find meaning in it then that is just as valid as not finding any meaning at all. i think sometimes individual words and lines don't matter as much as the theme and how the music behind the lyrics fleshes out what's missing from the words. HftW is like that for me.

also Us Against the World is indeed a fantastic song :cheesy:

Coldplay has been making a lot of songs lately that are growers (grow on you). This one is no exception. I do like the song. At first I couldn't stand the lyrics (seriously Chris, feeling drunk and high. I expected more from you, I mean. You wrote A Rush of Blood to the Head for Pete's sake), but upon further analysis, even that line goes with the song (as much as I wish he put it in a different way). Not a bad track and certainly better than X Marks The Spot, the only track I skip (disappointing that hat one is on Army Of One, which is a great track).

*lol* But must each song be terribly intellectual and profound? I think he just wanted to have fun and express simple sentiments in a fun way :) I like that its not all heavy and profound at the end of the day :)

I know I know, I get what he's saying but it still irks me.

Of course love is more than that, I was just referring to the joy of seeing someone you have a crush on (the ardent "in love" feeling as opposed to loving someone, cause they are two different things) :)

Alright think about other R&B songs and what theyre about and then look at this one. Its about not being drunk on alcohol or high on drugs, its about being drunk on life and high on love. Its almost like Coldplay is giving other R&B songs a nice slap in the face. Plus its not that electronic. Piano, guitar, strings. The only thing really "fake" is the percussion. I think Coldplay nailed R&B

When I heard the song for the first time I really didn't like it, too obvious and they needed a hit probably, but since the live performance I'm reallt starting to like it and I must admit it's pretty well done. The layers, the bass, the guitar work, and the drums live are pretty badass. They did a really good job. I also think the last part is best, when the guitar solo kicks in, it almost sounds like a rock kind of song.

Jonny´s magic always lifts a song...he is just amazing. Thats my favourite part too musically of Hymn! :) Kinda also reminds me of how he shows up at the end of the Scientist and just makes it epic.

What is "fake percussion" anyhow? xD This song is great and is very gutsy of them. Anyway I grew up on R&B as a kid. So to me I think they slayed it :)

This song is really growing on me, it's not my fave off the album, but I do enjoy it. But I was thinking that the cow bell, or whatever it is, sounds like the Red Hot Chili Peppers song Breaking the Girl where they bang on metal pipes for the beat.
