This ! Coldplay used to be the best melodists in contempary rock/pop music...but since MX (which was still kinda OK melody-wise) and Ghost Stories (which had a terrible lack of good melodies) the ideas seem to be running out !

 

You know I agree. But I prefer ghost to mx cos even if ghost does not have great melodies, It still have more... "soul", feeling, I like magic a lot for example, for me magic its the oldplay doing a pop aproach. And some songs kind remind me of the oldtimes, but still missing something. I don't get why people thinks that GS is sometimes worse than Mx. For me Gs is way thousand times better, like its not like the old four albums but its on the way you know.. but still miss some puzzles haha

I really enjoyed the more inspiring tracks on MX such as UFO and Us Against the World. While I love some upbeat stuff, I'm really praying for beautiful melodies.

I'd like to see more guitar riffs!! Jonny wasn't really given a chance to shine on Ghost Stories. I'm also hoping for an improvement in the quality of the lyrics and some powerful melodies like the ones that made me fall in love with them in the first place.

Really? Are you actually able to tell the difference between radio pop and Coldplay pop? I like EDM but I'd much rather listen to Coldplay. Pop like 1D sucks but pop/EDM like Coldplay is freaking amazing!!! I don't think that PoC or ASFOS is their best (altho I like both) but Paradise and VLV are easily Coldplay's best.

- There's five or six anthems with Chris' style.

- AHFOD is one of them.

I agree in one way. GS IMO is their worst (although I still really like it) but I think that MX is their best work. Other than MX, tho, well, I suppose that their first 4 albums are their best work! (I've also noticed... the old songs, you have to give them credit, they have such a deep meaning to them that just relates to everything no matter what...)

Just sayin', that wouldn't matter if all the songs were bad.

 

But one thing I like about Ellie is that she doesn't have that dumb 42 minute rule. She threw a lot into that album... and honestly I hope that dumb rule is gone for AHFOD, really it's just dumb and can impact the quality of an album.

I'd say probably 1-2 songs have some horns. I do think that since strings are Davide's specialty, he has contributed more of those. Because of Amazing Day, I know that they are still around. I don't expect any songs that sound like Viva La Vida, Rainy Day, or Yes, but we'll probably get some nice less prominent strings nonetheless.

If you ask me, X&Y is a hugely underrated album ! :P

And while @cp likes MX a lot, he is for example one of the (few?) people here around I've seen here who appreciates What If, imho an underrated masterpiece. And I consider myself to be an Oldplayer, but that does not mean that I can't see anything positive in a Newplay song once in a while (I have been getting criticised lately for trying to save Princess Of China in the MX Elimination thread, so...) So yeah, let's not generalize....

I've given the tracklist a look and to be fair, two of those weren't songs she wrote for that album. Love Me Like You Do is like a year old and from the 50 Shades OST, and Outside is a track that originates from Calvin Harris' album Motion. But still, 20 new tracks is quite a lot!

Well hopefully the other songs will be better than that god-awful first single by Elle.

42 min rule was brought in place because of x&y I think..... the individual songs on that album were some of Coldplay's best but the overall effect too overwhelming.... So they have since then curtailed the no. of songs and the length

Happy Birthday MX and I hope everyone is having a fine weekend so far (though there's still no news as of today). I think some already ruled out a 2015 release of the album which is quite possible considering the fact that it's barely two months before we end the year. I say it is still possible but I'm not so sure if they'll do something like what Adele did (Single + Album release after a month). And speaking of Adele, I don't think her highly anticipated album will have an impact on the total sales of AHFoD because they do have a different fan base and target audience. They'll probably clash in the chart's battle (if AHFoD will dropped this year).

It's a little bit off topic but I really hope they will release more CD singles/ promo CDs for this era.

I collect it and it's been quite a long time they didn't release CD singles (like viva la vida, violet hill, strawberry swing, clocks and many more).

The GS era was really poor imo.

 

Edit: Poor doesn't mean bad. I loved the album, just would have wanted more CD and collectibles.
