I'd give them a few shows AFTER the release (Friday) before they start playing a few more new songs. I assume you don't count SJLT as a new song.

ACTUALLY though, if they're gonna be filming in France (like I heard), then maybe new songs can show up there as well, assuming its for a live album

Exactly what I was thinking. They will probably want a few performances of the newer songs to take the best parts from seeing as how they have only played AICTAIY and Miracles once. If you don't count soundchecks.

Everyone's getting so excited for the release, but I only preordered the CD because I don't want to pay for it twice. So my release date is August 4th haha. Plus now we already know what basically the whole thing sounds like.

ITS HERE

I wasn't feeling the live version of M(SS) but after hearing the CDQ it might be my favorite from the EP. I've said that with each song that comes out but I don't know the guitar in the last chorus is just so amazing.

I don't think it's possible for me to not like a Coldplay song anymore

Okay quick thoughts now that I've heard the whole thing

AICTAIY - Still love the guitar/bassline/drum in this. It's just so beautiful and dark I think I actually prefer the first half of the song over the trademark Big Coldplay Explosion at the end. Solid 8/10

Miracles - ???? I don't know what happened here. This has gotta be one of the weaker songs Coldplay has put out over the past three albums. It just seems kinda . . . flat. Lyrics are rather uninspired, Chris's vocals are weak (especially compared to the songs Miracles 2 is squashed between), and for probably the first time ever Jonny's guitar just doesn't grab me. A lot of us were saying that A L I E N S doesn't sound like a Coldplay song in a good way; well this one doesn't sound like a Coldplay song in a bad way. 2/10

EDIT: Okay, okay, I listened to it a few more times to make sure I didn't have a knee-jerk reaction. Guy's bassline is suitably funky and the beat isn't half bad. Still not a fan of the lyrics/chorus though. New assessment is a 5/10

A L I E N S - This is still the best song on the EP (I will fight anyone on this :p ). And it sounds even better sandwiched between my two least favorite songs on the EP lolololol. One of their best songs since the Viva era, 10/10

SJLT - I unashamedly like this song anyway, so I especially love the extra energy kick in the live version (but then crowd noise gets me hype and I'm a sucker for echo effects on guitars, so *shrug emoticon*). Will definitely be dancing to this at the KC show in August. 7/10

Hypnotised EP Mix - Oh snap I was not expecting the extension to come at the beginning of the song. It has a music-boxy feel that I really like. The guys really know how to write a closer. 7.5/10

"First" listen score: 7/10 - Best major compilation since Prospekt's March in 2009

the ep has two of the best coldplay songs post viva era! happy fan here!!

Miracles (Someone Special) is

No seriously, it's catchy and I really dig the beat and groove. What a weekend

Well it's been a long wait for this fam. It's been weird getting everything in pieces, sometimes live, so it's difficult to review. But here it goes.

This feels like an improvement over AHFOD in production and instrumentation. I enjoy every song on the whole, and absolutely love a few of them. Almost a year and a half later however, these songs feel quite a bit different than AHFOD, so I don't wish to compare them too much. It actually flows well as a collection of songs better than I though it would, and I love the artwork :) My initial score for it would be 4/5--mostly on account of SJLT! Stoked on having this EP!

[spoiler=Track by Track ramblings/review][/spoiler

AICTAIY: Refreshing after AHFOD to have this song. Love the brooding, rolling bass and little details. I think it suffers a bit at the beginning compared to the amazing transition piano piece and explosive finale. By far one of Jonny's best guitar solos (though its almost inaudible) and great fills from Will. Production leaves some to be desired however. Chris' voice echos are a little awkward, and it feels like many parts of the song were literally stitched together (during tour). Lyrically the it is okay, full of some rather dull metaphors. Great addition to overall AHFOD era.

4/5

Someone Special: Can we just call it this? A very singular song in Coldplay's career, MSS has great funky guitar, cool swelling synths, and a pulsating rhythm that feels experimental for them. The lyrics are cheeseball, to be sure, but uplifting nonetheless. Its a direct, positive, and earnest message. The chorus is standout to me--one of the best we've heard in the past few eras, but production mires the passion. The folksy guitar and Jonny's looping riff is done in perfect Coldplay form. The Big Sean feature goes off smoothly. Its again a subpar verse by a subpar rapper, but nonetheless sounds good with the instrumental. Again, however, the production feels off. The chorus sounds like it was recorded separately from the verses, and deep underneath the throbbing, almost overwhelming drums, you can hear a beautiful, lush string section trying to take flight. Will's vocals are equally underplayed. This was so bothersome to me, after multiple listens, that the song simply was not as memorable. It feels dragging compared to live performance.

4/5

ALIENS: The best song of the AHFOD era, clearly was recorded and produced in another one. How do we know? Because its perfect. Unlike the above songs, it has no production faults. Every element of the song: the twangy, otherworldly guitar, the plucked acoustics, the shrieking strings, crunchy 5/4 drums--its all perfectly mixed. The lyrics are a bit too odd at times, but they are easy to forgive. The story the song is telling is not only important and emotional in the real world, but fun and fantastical in galaxy far away. Chris' voice is great, and the outro with the strings might be the prettiest thing Coldplay's ever put on record. I can't talk this song up enough. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll get something like it again, but at least we can savor this one.

5/5

SJLT (Tokyo Remix): Ehhhhh...... At the end of the day, its catchy. If we ignore the fact that this song is a lovechild ripoff of Closer and Roses by the Chainsmokers, it is a stadium-ready addition to Coldplay's EDM flavored tunes of late. The live version doesn't add much, though the percussion is more palpable and Chris' delivery is more energetic. The added guitar is nice as well, but overall this isn't all that different or more "rockable." A ho hum song to begin with some improvements. Can't say it fits well with the other tracks, especially with the incessant screams of fans throughout.

3/5

Hypnotised: The EP Mix intro taken right from the app is beautiful. I love Coldplay when they go ambient. But it feels a little forced before the original mix, in my opinion. Luckily this is a great closer to the EP. The jangly, sleepy glockenspiels are very pleasant. The overall production and mix is really nice, especially when Will's awesome laid back drumming slowly fades in on the first chorus. I love the droning guitar from Jonny and the classy acoustic guitar. Chris' lyrics are overall fairly serviceable, though again his voice mixing is oddly chosen. This song only got better with age and should have ended up on AHFOD at some point.

I agree with this whole thing lol. I usually don't mind production flaws too much unless they're really bad (aka Up&Up), but despite the bunches of things going on in this song, they're all perfectly audible and able to be followed along if you pay attention no matter what else is going on. One of my favorite things to do with albums after listening through them a few times is focus in on one instrument/aspect in particular--bassline, strings, etc.--and just follow them through each song. With Coldplay, I haven't been able to do that easily since the Viva era except with this song and a handful of others.

I also keep a little mental tally of "favorite moments" like short little guitar licks or the way a singer vocalizes a particular line. There were a couple of those moments on this EP--something which, again, hasn't happened for several albums now. For A L I E N S it was when Chris sings the second "Fly if you / Want to / That's alllll-riiiiight" and "All the E.T.s / Are phoning home." Chris seemed sort of stuck in a rut singing-wise for AHFOD, but he's back in fine form for KEP.

The ending with the strings reminds me of the Lukas instrumental with the sudden fade-to-echo effect. Love it!

I love the EP! I can't give a proper review, I'll just say that it's diverse, beautiful, sends a great message, everyone stands out in the songs. I waited a week to listen to A L I E N S and Miracles (Someone Special) and it was worthy. I was afraid I wouldn't like the rapping in Miracles but I like it. I'll have this EP in repeat amd I hope the band plays the songs for the rest of the tour.

Haven't been able to listen to the EP in order yet, but about the tracks, like I said before in some other thread, for me it is like this:

3 good songs vs. 2 not good songs

=> a much better ratio than all of AHFOD and GS :)

I really love A L I E N S and Hypnotised, they are just perfect songs and the best two of this entire Era.

I really like this EP :blush::blush::blush::blush::blush: miracles' brilliant! hooray Coldplay

Excellent EP .. this my first time i bought something ( digital ) from ITunes lol

still I'm going to get the CD Virsion

I just woke up to the released EP Ahhhhhh :heart:

And now we wait again... haha:laughing::sob:

Everyone's getting so excited for the release, but I only preordered the CD because I don't want to pay for it twice. So my release date is August 4th haha. Plus now we already know what basically the whole thing sounds like.

Me too - I've pre-ordered it and now I'm trying to decide whether to wait till Aug. 4th or download ?????? Feel like there's a party going on that I haven't been invited to !!!!

Thinking I'll probably wait................................

If there's a thing I hate about them in their post-Viva eras is that they release their best songs in EPs or as b-sides.

A L I E N S, All I Can Think About Is You and Hypnotised are good songs, just like were All Your Friends, Ghost Story and Moving To Mars....

Next year will be 10 years from the last good LP they managed to produce....

Soo here's my little review:

AICTAIY: really awesome song (love those "progressive" songs)

M(SS): very funky and uplifting. Even the rap-part kind of fits smoothly

ALIENS: just perfect! very space-y, experimental, always in movement, great message. Definitely in my personal Top5 songs!

SJLT: nice to have a little flashback to recent live shows you've been to and full of energy

H (KEP mix): a bit dissapointing that the extra 30s are only some "random" melodies from the app.

Flaws: i would have hoped for a special outro or some hidden track

Overall: so positive and uplifting, i love it!!

We really need to hear all the songs live at least once! SJLT, AICTAIY and M (SS) have already been played (but of course it would be great if they played AICTAIY and M (SS) even more), so I really hope they would play Hypnotised and A L I E N S (which are my most and second most favorite songs of the EP). Fingers crossed for gigs in France, it would be lovely to get them in a live release :)

Shall we get the ball rolling on LP8 discussions ;) ?

No collabs unless the track listing looks like this:

1. Tomorrow- Coldplay & Phoenix

2. Car Kids- Coldplay ft HONNE

These are two collabs I would do anything for.

For anyone that doesn't know HONNE check them out.
