Chris hints at Coldplay split

CHRIS MARTIN has hinted — yet again — about a possible COLDPLAY split.

During a radio interview he said: “Bands have a shelf life, you know, and we’re getting towards the end of the shelf.”

When asked if he was paving the way for a solo album, Chris initially replied, “yeah”, then quickly added, “absolutely not”.

I told you last November how Coldplay were in Trouble and planned on ending things in 2010.

Jonathan Ross 'Stitched Up' By Coldplay Pal Chris Martin

Jonathan Ross begged his Radio 2 producer for a trouble-free show yesterday - and was promptly stitched up by pop star guest Chris Martin, report The People.

Wossy, 48, and producer Andy Davies sparked fury a week ago with a sick joke about having sex with an Alzheimer's victim. So Ross began the new show by telling Andy: "Let's try and stay out of trouble - watch what you're saying."

But he reckoned without Coldplay idol Chris, who sang a song about the lewd messages to Fawlty Towers' star Andrew Sachs that cost comic Russell Brand his job and landed Ross a three-month suspension. Chris, 31, told Ross: "Everyone thinks you're great except for some idiots who just shouldn't be listening."

He then ignored the outcry over Sachs and performed his specially-composed tribute to the under-fire presenter. It began: Back on TV after a month or three/I done my penance for my wrong/Back on TV, back at the BBC/Way back in the spotlight where I belong./We had been banned, both me and Russell Brand/We had been stripped of all our powers./I just stayed in and thought about my sin/And watched old videos of Fawlty Towers. The folks were cross with Mr Ross,/they said I had crossed the line,/But they would know if they ever watched my show/That I am offensive nearly all the time.

But listener Ian Jones, 42, of Telford, said: "Even as a fan I'm bored by what happened and then the BBC rakes it up again. "Whether Ross likes it or not, some people were offended and he should let sleeping dogs lie."

TRIBUTE FOR SHAMED ROSS

COLDPLAY singer Chris Martin dedicated a song to disgraced presenter Jonathan Ross yesterday. Performing on Ross’s BBC Radio 2 show, he said he thought the £6 million-a-year presenter was great, and wrote the song to represent the people in the nation who love the shamed talk-show host.

The support comes after Ross was criticised last year by the BBC Trust for making a lewd remark to Chris’s wife, Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow. The BBC said comments made on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross were “gratuitous and unnecessarily offensive”.

Ross, who refers to his suspension from the BBC as his “dark period”, returned to the airways last week after a three-month suspension for making lewd phone calls to veteran actor Andrew Sachs. Before Chris sang the specially written song, he told Ross that the –people who banned him were “idiots” and he thought the shamed star was brilliant.

He said: “You are great man; don’t put yourself down. Everyone thinks you are great except for some idiots that shouldn’t be listened to and I can say what I like cos’ I can leave.”

He added he wanted to sing the song about Ross’s and Brand’s troubles “to represent the people in the nation that love you, which is a lot of people”.

He said the lyrics had come to him while watching Ross interviewing William Shatner on his BBC1 chat show on Friday night. The song began: “Back on TV, after a month or three, I done my penance for my wrong. Back on TV, back at the BBC, way back in the spotlight where I belong.”

When the song finished, Ross hesitated and said: “Well that was…beautiful and exhausting and will hopefully feature on the biggest selling album of 2009.”

Despite the praise, Ross has suffered a severe ratings blow, with the popularity of his chat show plunging. After only one week back from suspension, almost two million viewers switched off Friday Night with Jonathan Ross on BBC1.

The show drew an audience of only 3.2 million after scoring more than 5.1 million in its first week back after three months. The figures are another setback for Ross, who learned last week that he will have his pay slashed by 15 per cent because of budget cuts.

The show’s ratings will worry BBC bosses because it is even lower than the average figure of 3.7 million which Ross’s controversial programme drew in its last run.

'Back in the spotlight': Jonathan Ross is stitched up by Chris Martin's radio tribute

Admiration: Coldplay singer Chris Martin (right) performed a song he wrote for Jonathan Ross

He is trying hard to stay out of trouble at the moment, but Jonathan Ross was stitched up by Chris Martin on his Radio 2 show yesterday after the Coldplay frontman dedicated a song to him.

Performing on Ross’s BBC Radio 2 show, Chris told the disgraced presenter: 'Everyone thinks you're great except for some idiots who just shouldn't be listening.'

His song was about the obscene messages to Fawlty Towers' star Andrew Sachs that landed Ross a three-month suspension and cost Russell Brand his job.

Ross began the radio show by telling his producer Mark Davies: 'Let's try and stay out of trouble - watch what you're saying.'

Chris added: 'You are great man; don’t put yourself down. Everyone thinks you are great except for some idiots that shouldn’t be listened to and I can say what I like cos’ I can leave.'

He added that he wanted the song 'to represent the people in the nation that love you, which is a lot of people.'

The song began:

Back on TV after a month or three/I done my penance for my wrong/Back on TV, back at the BBC/Way back in the spotlight where I belong./We had been banned, both me and Russell Brand/We had been stripped of all our powers./I just stayed in and thought about my sin/And watched old videos of Fawlty Towers. The folks were cross with Mr Ross,/they said I had crossed the line,/But they would know if they ever watched my show/That I am offensive nearly all the time.

Ross, 48, is trying to stay out of the limelight and is said to have begged his Radio 2 producer Andy Davies for a trouble-free show.

The crude phone calls by him and Brand caused a media storm last year, resulting in his suspension without pay.

Ross also sparked fury last week after he cracked a joke about having sex with an Alzheimer's victim.

Oooops! Whilst the song was inoffensive, surely Chris should have realised how much attention it would bring. The papers are looking at anything to criticise Jonathan for.

Oh wow! Congratulations! I've registered for the lottery but don't fancy my chances - didn't manage to snag anything for any of the lotteries/comps last year.

Hope you can work something out with your colleague. It being half term makes it perfect for me.

Fingers crossed for both of us!

Bummer Mich, I really hope you can come, I was looking forward to meeting you and I know Lori will be bummed out if you can't make it.
