Coldplay had billed their new album as a move into pop. But Alexis Petridis hears the same old band underneath Coldplay's follow-up to 2008's biggest-selling album is a curious thing. On the one hand, it aims for a certain ponderous gravitas. Mylo Xyloto is a concept album complete with a short filmic overture, interstitial instrumental pieces called things like A Hopeful Transmission, and recurring lyrical themes, set, as concept albums are legally obliged to be, in a futuristic dystopia: you can tell it's a futuristic dystopia because one of the interstitial inst…

Would there be any point? Or are the songs good the way they are? (and of course, acoustic songs, are already acoustic, like UFO?) Personally, I wouldn't mind listening to CB, or HLH in acoustic form. (man, I must suck at starting interesting threads too)

Coldplay - Mylo Xyloto [Album] -93% Coldplay’s last offering back in 2008, titled Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends took the bands fan base to new levels and saw the band reach new heights in their musical atmosphere. Their latest offering, Mylo Xyloto leads on from this and takes the listener to further levels that Viva la Vida could never offer. From the start, you are introduced to Coldplay’s new atmospheric sound leading into 'Hurts Like Heaven'; a fast paced blend of piano, distorted guitars and electronic soundscapes with clear and compelling vocals from Chris Martin. 'Paradise', Coldplay’s latest single from Mylo Xyloto, continues the pace with …

Coldplay Mylo Xyloto (EMI) Rating: Three and a half stars out of five (3.5/5) To confront a new work by Coldplay -- a concept album, no less -- is to confront your feelings about super-sized rock. Have you had enough of wordless "whoa-ee-oh" hooks that seem to be written especially for big stadium moments? Sick of insert-handclap-section-here bridges that appear to be there only so 20,000 people can join in later? If so, you might well have a problem with songs like this album's "Paradise" or "Princess of China," the latter a duet featuring Chris Martin and the dreaded Rihanna vocalizing together. And you wouldn't be alone. Even so, Mylo Xyloto makes it …

  10. Are there any problems with it, in your opinions? For me, the ETIAW -> Major Minus -> U.F.O. area was just bad. Along with HLH -> Paradise -> Charlie Brown, and UiF -> AHT. So, I fixed it. 1. Mylo Xyloto 2. Hurts Like Heaven 3. Charlie Brown (though I call it Cartoon Hearts, cus I prefer that name. I put it here cus it keeps up the momentum from HLH, which I thought Paradise interrupted) 4. Paradise 5. Us Against the World 6. Major Minus 7. M.M.I.X. 8. Every Teardrop is a Waterfall (now it's literally the centerpiece) 9. U.F.O. 10. Princess of China 11. Up in Flames 12. Moving to Mars (Fits so well here, one last does of melancholy befo…

Now that we know all the tunes on Mylo Xyloto, what do you think their show will shape up for the MX Tour? Not being a festival closer, I expect it to be a little longer, probably in the 22-23 song range. Here's my dream show for the MX tour: A Hopeful Transmission/Don't Let it Break Your Heart Lovers in Japan Yellow Hurts Like Heaven Life in Technicolor II Paradise Speed of Sound Sparks Violet Hill Us Against the World Charlie Brown The Scientist The Hardest Part Princess of China Shiver Up in Flames Politik Up with the Birds Clocks Fix You MMIX/Every Teardrop is a Waterfall In My Place Viva La Vida Notes: -I love the MX intro into Hurts …

Would it be good to have a place where we can all post our individual reviews? Here's mine. (ps. I was so desperate to listen to it I found to it online, but WILL be buying the proper version on Monday). Mylo Xyloto – After the huge success of the instrumental Life In Technicolor to kick-start Viva La Vida, the band go for a much shorter intro this time round, the title track builds up to a crescendo.. 6/10 Hurts Like Heaven – …before unleashing itself into one of the most disappointing recorded tracks in recent memory. All the vigour and energy of the live version is lost and Chris Martin’s vocals hide behind synthetic effects. 4/10 Paradise – Long time coll…

If we get any B-Side songs or EPs, do you think they'll fit into the concept of the album, or will they just sound similar to the MX stuff? I think it'd be pretty cool if they could be slotted into the MX tracklist and fit in, like MtM apparently fits in at the end or after Up In Flames.

Don't know if i'm hearing things, but if people remember Charlie Brown was originally being played with or on accordion when Guy stepped in and said this is too much (Thanks Guy) - anyway, listening to it, and i think they left some of the accordion on there, listen closely after sped up vocals start, and the guitar riff builds up, and before the drum comes in. I think they left in the accordion as a homage to the original roots of the song, listen closely in the first 20s or so

Mylo Xyloto is an album that will divide fans. It’s Coldplay alright, but it’s different. They’ve created a big-thinking concept album that serves up love and liberation at epic proportions. Continue to read for a track-by-track review. Mylo Xyloto – the first track on the album. Just forty seconds of an ambient build-up to the gorgeous explosion of Hurts Like Heaven. It’s fast-paced, big, synthy and clearly defines the attitude and audial direction of the album. Paradise follows. One that we’ve already heard and is widely used in media at the the moment. Again, heavy on the synth, stabs and strings, with the sweet and infectious chorus “Para-, para-, paradise!”. …

Rating ***** Coldplay’s comeback to the music scene is their umpteenth challenge to reinvent themselves after the worldwide success of Viva la Vida Or Death And All Of His Friends in 2008. The album opens with the short M.X. As it happens in a spectacular haute-cuisine restaurant, Coldplay wants to make sure that every single listener begins the journey from the same point: 43 seconds of mood-setting magic. Hurts Like Heaven is the kick-start of the album, an up-tempo song reminiscent of Arcade Fire’s Keep The Car Running and Bruce Springsteen’s Dancing In The Dark. Although the structure of the song is not distant from their previous works, the production is th…

  22. Now here's a review that will spark some debate! :P We take a look at Coldplay's least subtle — and perhaps finest — album ever, in Bigger Than the Sound. You can accuse Coldplay of being many things — mawkish, maudlin, bland, boring, grandiose, geeky, preachy, polished, M.O.R., A.O.R., E.L.O. — and more often than not, their (countless) critics do just that. You cannot, however, accuse them of being subtle. Not ever. That's OK, though. None of the hugest bands on the planet (the U2s, Linkin Parks, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc.) are practiced in the art of subtlety. It is simply not in their nature. Instead, they deal in universal themes, pai…

Hey guys I was wondering if any of you had any info on the release of mylo xyloto in India? Would it be released here under the worldwide release on October 24? Also it has to be a cd copy. I don't have access to iTunes here. Nor do I want to use iTunes. Please let me know as I only have a short period of time in which I can actually go and physically buy it. Thanks!!!
